Hi everyone!
I'm looking for my very first digital, and I hope you can help. I'm going to Jamaica this winter, and want to take a LOT of pictures, lol.
I would like something that costs under 400US, and has at least 6MP and 5X optical zoom, if that's possible at that price point.
I would really like to find one that takes AA batteries for ease of operation.
I've been looking at the Canon Powershot SD600, and the Kodak Z650, but I don't think either one of them use AAs.
Anyone out there have an suggestions?
I'd be so grateful for any help!
Thanks,

is my guess at a great model for your needs, but any Canon will eb awesome. They have the richest color, the easiest use, and they last forever ona rechargeable lithium battery...so, sorry no AAs. But you won't be inconvenienced. The rechargeable battery is cheaper and better anyway. You will ADORE any Canon camera you choose. We have 3!
Thank you so much for the reply. It's very interesting to learn that the rechargable battery is long lasting. For some reason I had it in my mind that they didn't, and that it was a hassle to use.
Thanks too, for the link, I'm going to read it closely.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

hey, dont get a generic camera, they a crap! even if they have good specs they will all suck...
I hadn't really considered a generic at this stage, but appreciate your warning, as it's early days for my shopping around yet. I might have been tempted, but now, thanks to you, I won't even look at them.
Thank you!

I have a Canon PowerShot SD600 and think that it is an excellent point and shoot digicam to start out with it. Its relatively small, compact and light. It is also has some very nice features (too many to list here). If you decide to pick this camera up, be sure to pick up a 512mb memory card. The card that comes in the box is only 16mb and you won't be able to take many photos with that amount of memory.
I think you'll have a difficult time finding a digital camera that uses AA batteries. Most point and shoot digicams come with lithium-ion batteries. Frankly, lithium-ion are a plus - just charge and go.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the SD600 only achieves up to 3x optical zoom (which is pretty standard for point and shoot cameras).
If you absolutely have to have a digital camera with 5x opitical zoom, take a look at the Olympus Stylus 720 SW (7.1 megapixels, 5x opitical zoom, $399).
Wow, you've given me a lot to think about!
I plan to definitely buy extra memory when I purchase my camera. Most I've seen come with very little, but I think the Canon SD600 really takes the cake! It's got the lowest yet. 16mb is ridiculous!
I will probably bite the bullet and buy a 1Gb right away.
As for the 5X optical, I'm flexible on that. I'm not a major picture taker, but do want the picture quality, so the 6MP is really most important to me.
Thank you for suggesting the Olympus Stylus 720 SW. I will surely look into it.
Take care, and thanks again!

There are 2 Canon cameras that meet your wants:
A700 and A710 IS
$350 and $400
6 Megapixel - 6X zoom
Excellent lens - very sharp images
AA batteries
Since they have a 6X lens, I would spend the extra $50 and get the A710 with image stabilization.
Here are the specifications:

Thank you for your research! I will be checking that one out for sure. It definitely covers all my 'gotta haves'.
Thanks for your input!
