Need urgent help with my first website.

by mtf612 - 9/19/06 9:22 PM

Im a high schooler and creating two clubs an my own computer repair company this year. So i need to make 3 websites. So im doing one at a time to get this done. My first website (fcef.net) was designed with microsoft office 2003 publisher.

I have finished the site itself.
I registered the domain (fcef.net) with godaddy.
I got hosting from aspnix (google it for info)

Now I dont know how to get my webpages on the internet. Ive tried the publish to web button nut maybe im doing things wrong. If anyone can give me step by step to get my site online ill be extreamly grateful!
Thanks in advance!

Checklist....

by steve749 - 9/20/06 10:08 AM In reply to: Need urgent help with my first website. by mtf612

Here are my questions for an initial checklist:

1) Are the files that make up the website on a server in aspnix's network?

2) Does the domain contain a DNS record pointing to the IP you got from aspnix?

3) Is the aspnix server hosting the site have its web server software configured? If it uses IIS I may be able to help somewhat but if it is Apache or something else then maybe not as much.

Those would be my starting points on where things aren't working.

JB

I looked at fcef.net real quick and it has a parked GoDaddy page. I checked the DNS and it looks like it isn't pointing to nameservers for aspnix.

1. Go to aspnix and find out what the DNS or domain name servers need to be set to. (something like ns1. aspnix.com and ns2.aspinix.com)
2. Go to GoDaddy and on your domain set the DNS entries to the nameservers. This will now let the internet know where your uploads are or will be located. This process can take from 2-48hours to be complete. You may have up and down time until the whole process completes.

Aspinix may have given you a way to login to the hosting without the domain name (an IP number or something like member.aspinix.com). You could do this before everything is complete so that the data is there when it is done. If you do wait, when it is complete you will probably see a page that aspinix has set up as a default.

Now what file(s) am i supposed to upload to the site?
And where do i upload them to ? (I know where to go just not what location to upload to on the servers hard drive)

Publish

If you are using Frontpage it is easiest to just use the publish feature. As long as your hosting account is all set to accept Frontpage, it should just ask you to log in and thent eh files will be uploaded.

If you aren't using any FrontPage features (forms, includes, etc.) you wil just need to upload the index.htm , and other pages, and your images.

so aggervated...

Okay so it was being parked by godaddy than i put in the ns1.aspnix.com and ns2.aspinix.com and it was being parked by aspnix. So i was trying to figure out how to upload the page and now randomly it changed straight back to godaddy? ***?

Is it supposed to do this?
Also when i hit "publish to web" with MS office 03 publisher , it brings up a save box and i type fcef.net and it doesnt bring up the uploading boxes like its supposed to (as you said and the help file said)

A few questions....

by steve749 - 9/20/06 8:18 PM In reply to: so aggervated... by mtf612

1) Did it randomly change or do you have a cached value of the GoDaddy site? Cached here by either your DNS storing the wrong IP or your browser using its saved page rather than requesting a fresh one from a server by the way.

2) The question is where is the site on the aspnix.com server and did you really set up the IP on the aspnix.com's DNS servers? IOW, when I go to fcef.net which IP do I go to and what directory on that server am I supposed to hit? Does aspnix.com use IIS for their web server or something else?

okay

since its back to norm im trying to upload the files. When i hit the publish button i type in "http://fcef.net" and it asks for a username and password. I am not sure if im using the right password, because everytime i hit okay, it pops back up a minute later , followed by saying it cant find the url (which it says if you hit cancle) . Im not sure which of the user names and passwords they want me to use...oy so confused lol.

Contact hosting

by entrecon - 9/21/06 7:06 AM In reply to: okay by mtf612

As each hosting company has a slightly different process, I would contact their help desk. You are paying them for hosting and part of your money should be covering support issues.

This would also confirm that they have configured everything to handle FrontPage. I have hosting that says they support FrontPage, but they don't load teh extensions until you specificly ask them to(or if you have a control panel, there may be an option for you to load teh extensions yourself).

BTW: If you read my initial post you will note that the full process of switching over may take up to 48hours and during that time it may go back and forth depending on the path on the internet it takes to get to your site.
