cool itunes work-around/hack

by aplardi - 9/22/06 9:32 AM

I'm sorry if this is fairly common knowledge, but as most of you know in the new iTunes you can transfer your purchased music from PC to PC through iTunes. However you cannot transfer all of the items on your iPod through iTunes.

HOWEVER. You get around this, iTunes allows you to add music to your purchased section. Just drag and drop all your files into the purchased section, and now you can transfer them back and forth to between machines.

It worked for me and now I can take all of my music back and forth to work via iTunes. Gotta love it. Let me know if it works for you.

If you're wanting a playlist that still just has your purchased iTunes music, make a smart playlist that only shows protected music :)

Unless the advent of the macintels changed things, I thought the formatting was incompatible???

No worky (details...)

I gave this a shot, and found that it does not work.

Scenario: 1 PC and 1 Macbook. PC holds entire music library (located at my office) and syncs with 60GB Video iPod. Macbook (limited music library, located at home) is used to import new CD's etc. I want to transfer the imported music on my Macbook to my PC so that I can 1.) Keep in my main music libary and 2.) sync with my iPod.

I connected my iPod to the Macbook and changed settings to Manual update and enable hard disk use. At this point I was able to manually copy newly imported music from the Macbook into the "Purchased" music folder on the iPod. I then connected the iPod to my PC and chose "transfer purchased music" and NOTHING happened. I tried it several times, and realized that this shortcut does not work.

I wish it was possible to more easily transfer music from my home laptop to my work pc. So far it's a hassle to do including manually copying music off the ipod using podutil, which often does not retain album/artist info which translates to manually naming songs/albums/etc.

What a pain. Anyone found a solution that works?
