A couple of problems here…

by the Otter - 9/22/06 12:58 PM In reply to: Slow drivers in the fast lane...................... by kateyandsarahsdad

1) There’s no such thing as “fast lane.” It’s called a “passing lane,” and if you’re in the passing lane when you’re not passing someone, it doesn’t matter how fast or slow you’re going; you’re breaking the law.

2) While slow drivers are certainly a pain, it sounds like your definition of a “slow driver” is some that’s “not keeping with the flow.” While this is certainly true sometimes, it would be good to remember that if “the flow” is any higher than the posted speed limit, then every driver that’s “keeping with [it]” is breaking the law. If they’re breaking the law, they’re committing a crime, which makes each of them, by definition, a criminal.

It seems ironic to me that so many people seem to think the number on the sign is a “speed suggestion” as opposed to a “speed limit.” If the sign says 65, that means you shouldn’t be doing 75 or 70 or even 66. 60 is okay (albeit annoying as heck), even 50 is okay (just please put on your flashers, at that point); but driving over the posted speed limit is not only illegal but by extension, immoral.

Personally, I’d rather maintain my integrity than get to McDonald’s 20 seconds earlier, but if you’d rather be a criminal, that’s your prerogative; just don’t act like I’m the one with the problem.

by drew562 - 5/30/06 9:29 PM In reply to: What gets under your skin about other drivers? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Ever sit at a light and feel the ground shaking, sonic booms and feel like your heart's going to pop out of your chest and this idiot comes alongside of you and you see his windows and the metal of his car beating in time to the music being played so loud out of two 20" sub-woofers? Where is that herd of Elephants that want to walk over this guys car.

Boom Box Cars Protection

by komailmookhy - 5/31/06 12:55 PM In reply to: Elephant Boom Box Cars by drew562

Friend of mine ('cool black dude' UK version, he thinks, 'Gob on a stick' to the rest of us, but a sound guy to everyone) caught a friend of his in his mobile boom box. Having always wondered how he could stand music that loud he knocked on the guys window. It was only as the driver turned round he realised he was wearing earplugs!! Half the county knew by the next day. When they pull up beside you in future think of this, have a laugh and make them paranoid!!!!

What does this have to d owith tech?

by datajockeys - 5/30/06 9:30 PM In reply to: What gets under your skin about other drivers? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Sounds like a push-poll from a bunch of namby pamby liberals that think all forms of annoyance should be outlawed.

Why don't you have a poll to discuss cruddy support from major (your advertisers) software and hardware vendors?

Why don't we discuss how to properly recycle used computer equipment and encourage manufactures to use more recyclable content in their stuff?

Why are we focusing on use of cell phones in traffic where there are more pertinent things to discuss?

What's tech gotta do with it!

by lloko - 5/30/06 10:24 PM In reply to: What does this have to d owith tech? by datajockeys

Hey DataJock,
Well for one thing, as an IT tech who is constantly runnning from one repair to the next; burning gas because some idiot is doing 35 in 60mph passing lane chewing up my time and money not only infuriates me but the customers I'm trying to reach. It definitly impacts my business and sanity.
Liberal point of view? Not so fast..... It's the bleeding heart liberals who feel these morons should be freed upon society so they to may express their rights to slow us all down, drain precious gas from our economy, and yank the productivity from our souls!

What does this have to do with tech?

by dfaller - 5/30/06 10:54 PM In reply to: What does this have to d owith tech? by datajockeys

If not for overdeveloped technology, this cell phones and drivers thing wouldn't be an issue. I get a good scare at least once per week by someone jabbering on a phone while driving, and I live in a relatively small community. It just isn't possible to do your best driving while yakking on the phone (or putting on make up or doing a crossword puzzle or jerking around with whatever is was you thought you ordered from Starbucks). The simple fact is that people are too unaware while driving something that weighs from 1,500 to 8,000 pounds. If people didn't have the option to divert their attention, none of this would be a problem. There is no good reason to try to multitask while operating a vehicle. Say what you will about motorcycles splitting lanes, but at least they're not on the phone or drinking a latte...

I have to agree with this CNET Member...

by lassean1 - 5/30/06 11:43 PM In reply to: What does this have to d owith tech? by datajockeys

I am so sick of forums that are focused around the wrong aspects of a billion dollar industry that I love dearly and this is all the topics I seem to see on CNET lately. I was impressed when I first signed up with these forums people seemed to know a lot and were very helpful. Now, it seems like every time I open my e mail the forums begin with Cell phone or driving topics which hardly covers the billions of dollars that are spent on the hi tech gadgets a year.

Why not talk about states that are making it illegal to dump old Pc in a Landfill or old batteries and what we could do to help the environment.

In the end the drivers are going to keep on eating their hot pockets while screaming at the kids while driving in and out of lanes... That is not going to change...

This is the dumbest place for forums lately and unless you guys don't "SPRUCE" It up a little I will have to find my knowledge elsewhere, cause I do not believe this is expanding anyone's knowledge at all.

Thanks, take it easy,

Sean

I agree

by bbrockva - 5/31/06 5:49 AM In reply to: I have to agree with this CNET Member... by lassean1

I totally agree. This forum did have excellent topics about our ever growing supply of technological gear. But now i'm just dumbfounded over the fact that for a while now I have to delete my emails from cnet because there is nothing there that interests me. Stop worrying about stupid drivers. Like Lassean1 said, its not going to change. Thank you.

Why, why and another why you ask

by amrobinson - 5/31/06 6:13 AM In reply to: What does this have to d owith tech? by datajockeys

You are right in that this is a side issue from the normal CNET content and you have many valid questions you should take up in the appropriate forums. But your response to this weekly poll is alarming. You have ignored the fact that all the points we voted upon can and do cause accidents, injuries and death. The standard of driving is appaling in America. Most of the bad driving habits boil down to bad manners and that reason alone should be cause for shame.

WHY?

by wayneh143 - 6/1/06 6:07 AM In reply to: Why, why and another why you ask by amrobinson

You have identified what I feel to be the larger problem with today's isolationistic society. Years of developing interactive skills with video games, 'personal' music/entertainment and self-important technology such as Blackberry and 'Hot-Spots' are encouraging people to be completely uninvolved in interacting with another human without the use of some insulating device. You cannot just 'restart' when you make a major interpersonal error and have things return to the pre-error state like you can with video games. People get their feelings or worse hurt in real life, but if those people are only perceived as nothing more than a avitar or icon that can be changed at will then there's no empathy or concern for another's well being if one does not consider them as actually existing in reality. So, in conclusion, I think that there IS a connection between the driving peeves and tech!

Technology and Antisocial Behaviour

by amrobinson - 6/2/06 5:52 AM In reply to: WHY? by wayneh143

I think you have hit the nail on the collective head. In a queue, say, waiting to go up the Empire State Bulding, people chat quietly so as not to annoy others and for privacy, but put a cell phone in their hands and they don't seem to be bothered that everyone in a 15 foot circumference can hear every word.

There is widespread concern that children are not developing social skills in part because of the time spent in front of games, TVs and PCs and as adults the use of e-mail instead of picking up the 'phone or even going round to someone's office and working from home increases isolation.

So, there is a connection between technology through isolationism to selfishness and bad driving.

what does it have to do with it?

Not a lot but I see even though you are complaining about it, you opened it and responded to it. Hmmm

The thing that gets under my skin about other drivers?

by celtmaiden - 5/30/06 10:18 PM In reply to: What gets under your skin about other drivers? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I could actually say all of the above, with the exception of Motorcycles. I don't have a problem with them cutting traffic, particularly at a traffic light. Go for it. If I had a bike, I would.

Post 45 of 159

Respect the motorcycles...

by bpetheram - 5/30/06 10:32 PM In reply to: The thing that gets under my skin about other drivers? by celtmaiden

I want to say - as a NON-BIKER - that I agree motorcycles have every right to cut through traffic and get ahead of the rest of the idiots who are playing the braking game.

I only fear for the motorcyclists because most of the retards on the roads in California don't even THINK about them. Lane changes without blinkers, weaving through traffic, etc., etc., etc. These create seriously unsafe conditions for motorcyclists. They have to be even more skilled and careful than any other kind of driver out there every time they get on the roads. Every year thousands of motorcyclists are killed - and it's usually not because of stunts of excessive speed. The majority of the accidents are caused by OTHER people on the roads who simply don't pay attention.

I think ANY PERSON in a car or truck who causes a motorcycle accident, regardless of whether the biker is injured or killed or unhurt, should lose their license for a year. It should be handled like a DUI. Maybe that would create some respect for the bikes on the road.

I hear people whine and see people shake their heads when motorcycles pass through the traffic. Well, idiots, get one yourself. I'm sure then you'll be thinking differently - and realizing how much more careful you have to be (and skilled) in order to survive from day to day among the thousands and thousands of people who don't even deserve to be behind the wheel of a vehicle.
