I have a Gateway plasma TV model GTW-P42M303 that died after 13 months. The plasma screen and most of the boards are labeled LGE PDP 42V5. I replaced the main power board and the TV still does the same thing. When plugged in and the rear main power switch on the TV has a yellow status light on the front. Pressing the front power switch or the remote power switch results in a green status light on the front, a relay energizes on the main power board for a couple of seconds then denergizes. While energized the board on the lower left (rear view) has a small bank of LEDs of which D2 and D13 light D17 blinks. All go out when the relay denergizes. The ZSU?S board P/N 6870QZE009E or the other number is 6871QYH027A had a blown fuse and two large capicitors that show signs of high heat (plastic skin is split) though neither seem to be burned. Do you have the ZSUS board for this TV? If not do you want to buy the TV? I have the shipping box.
Later….
A quick update. I succeeded in getting a main power board from Gateway. It didn’t fix the problem.
I googled Gateway plasma TV parts and found Steve Hu: masterhu@yahoo.com .
Steve has parts and manuals for what seems to be a number of plasma TVs. I was able to ascertain that my plasma TV is really a relabeled LG. Steve was able to send the ZSUS board and the service manual for the LG model of the TV. The manual seems to be about 99% the same as my TV. I down loaded a owner’s manual from LG for a 42” Ultra Plasma and it matches closely also.
Later….
The ZSUS board got here today. I installed it and the TV powers up now. I swapped out the main power boards and the old one works as well.
The TV does the following: Powers up, Has a picture, Has sound, Remote works, Menu appears on the screen, TV has reception from cable.
TV has the following symptom: Vertical bars, unevenly spaced with uneven widths. See attached picture.
The right side appears to wrap back from the edge about 5 inches. An adjustment? Checked only adjustments in service manual (Va = 65 VDC and Vs = 193 VDC).
What would you suggest? I can go into it and check the vertical ribbon cable connections. Anything else?
Later….
I did some additional trouble shooting and found that the ribbon cables that connect from the bottom edge of the plasma screen to the driver boards have some surface mount components on the underside where they can’t be seen unless you disconnect the cables and unscrew the heat sinks. The vertical black bars were caused by two different problems. The wide bar to the left was caused by what appears to be a surface mount component (black, marked 100 with a silver band at both ends) that is obviously blown out which caused the loss of ¼ of the vertical lines on that connector. The narrower bars appear to be caused by partial failure of the other surface mount component (dime sized epoxy, brown) which exhibits small pin point burn marks. The wider black bar on the right appears to be caused by multiple burns in the same component.
The signs of this failure would lead one to suspect a flaw in the design of the TV. The cooling is dependent on passive air flow. The components that fail run at extremely high temperatures and are located in areas of the TV that have less air flow due to constricted space or to limited vent holes in the back cover. It is my conclusion that this TV failed due to heat. The permantly mounted epoxy encapsulated components on the ribbon cables that are integral parts of the plasma screen failed and caused the ZSUS board to fail.
Since the TV works with the exception of these bars it would appear that the majority of the PC boards are good. Are you interested? I can also send a copy of the service manual for the Daewoo TV (LG) this is based on.
I have plasma tv made by LG.The model is PDP42WVSN3 - looks similar to Gateway P42M102.
I need complete power board. If You sell one, I can send You a photo of the unit and the board.I,m from europa.Thks.
So, you appear to have gone farther in troubleshooting than anyone else in this. From everything that you wrote, it looks like it is not worth trying to fix. I was ready to try if it was just the connector and a couple of components. This is truly a bad design, that will not be fixable? yes/no......
By the way thanks for describing the level of detail that you did.
Hello,
I appreciate the level of detail you used in describing what you did. You are the only person who I've been able to find who has a similar problem with a similar model. I also have an LG model (PDP42WVSN3).
My problem sounds the same as you described with the exception of the serial numbers and the numbers and location of the LED bank. Two of the LEDs stay on and occasionally one on the end will blink before all LEDs go out when the relay denergizes. Also, I found two more LEDs separate from the LED bank, but on the same board, labeled VSYNC and RESET_OUT. The RESET_OUT LED stays on while the relay is energized, but the VSYNC LED comes on a split second before it denergizes.
Anyway, I followed what you did and have carefully examined the ZSUS board (which is on the right side of my TV), but couldn't find any sign of blown fuses or burnt capacitors. I am not really certain that the problem is in the ZSUS board, but before the relay on the main power board denergizes, something on the ZSUS board makes a kind of vibrating, buzzing noise. Also, I took the ZSUS board out of the TV so that I could more closely inspect it. I turned the power on and tried to turn the TV with no ZSUS board in it, and the screen turns on (backlight, all black, no picture).
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I also have a gateway Plasma ED TV. My tv shuts down after about 20 min. after start up and will only start up again is I shake it or turn it off for a while. I will never stay on more than 20 to 30 min. I do not want to spend that kind of money either so any help finding replacement parts or a reputable repair service located in the Temecula, Ca. area would be greately appreciated.
I have had a 3 year bout with Gateway, and gone through 2 46" plasmas. Now the 2nd has died, and I don't have the energy to go through the runaround I went through the first time to get it replaced.
I am still under warranty, and they were scheduled to fix it multiple times, but as usual, D1 can't get the parts. Confidentially, a D1 employee stated that through the ERT process, Gateway has in the past refunded some customers. Some times a restocking fee applies, but they still get their money back.
I have sent in my letter to the ERT. I'm just wondering if I'll get anything out of it. Has anyone else sent in their letter, and did anything come of it? Has anyone received any sort of refund?
I am the attorney who is prosecuting the class action case against Gateway. Please contact me so that we can discuss your matter in more detail. I am also looking for Gateway Plasma TV customers who have literature from when they bought their TVs that state the MTBF and Lamplife of the TVs.
MTBF is also known as "Mean Time Between Failures". Both MTBF and Lamplife are stated in hours.
It is important to know the extent of the representations of use that Gateway made to induce purchases.
My direct email address is anh@handal-law.com
Thanks
Anton Handal
