I absolutely HATE the newest versions Apple has put out. I am so put out by the software that I have told everyone within earshot not to upgrade their iPods or iTunes. I was trying to purchase some music and was FORCED to download the new version to get the music. Guess what? Now my iPod has lost music, can't play certain podcasts and is much slower to upload to now. As for iTunes, it is consistantly trying to update and "fix" my music (checking for gaps, etc) and it is sometimes IMPOSSIBLE to connect to the iPod while it's doing it's rounds on my music. It has been checking volumes and gaps for 3 days now and has yet to finish. I'm sick of this crap and Apple service acts as if nothing is wrong and that I'm an isolated incident. This is ridiculous and if Apple wants to continue to rule the portable music industry they had better get their act in gear and start answering for these issues that THOUSANDS of their consumers are experiencing. Just own up to the screw-up and fix it. I would be much happier to hear Apple say "We had some major issues w/ iTunes 7 and iPod 1.2 software and we are working hard to fix the problems. Thanks for your understanding." This steadfast silence is disgusting. Maybe Apple can change their slogan to "iPod & iTunes - Enjoy The Silence"
Try a Beta next time...like other competent software manufacturers.
Itunes won’t let me download the shows I bought unless I “upgrade” to iTunes 7.0. When I click on check for purchases, I get a message saying
“Upgrade to the latest version of iTunes
Some of the items in your queue require iTunes 7.0 or later to download. iTunes is a free download. [Upgrade] [Cancel]”
It only seems to show when downloading video files.
Normally it not a big deal but the last time I got the latest iTunes right away, it was version 6 and it corrupted my library file, and destroyed all my play list, it me 5 hours to rebuild. You know what I'll wait, for the stable version.
I've been lucky I guess that my iTunes 7 upgrade went fine and I enjoy the using the Cover Art browser and the new features. I don't even mind that iPod Updater is in iTunes -- one less application to worry about keeping up to date. Several people at work have upgraded without issues as well.
So while I understand there are problems, its not a COMPLETE failure.
I upgradeD to ITunes 7 the day after it was released and it works beautifully with my PC at work. The cover art is pretty but I don't use that view very often. I like the download section and the display once you connect your Ipod to your system. GO ITUNES.
While I understand that some people are having no problems, this issue is not just with me, but with thousands of users. What percentage of users, I don't know, but better quality assurance standards should have been in place before issuing a major release like iTunes 7. Even with a small percentage having issues, the guys at Apple should have been aware of potential problems and probably would have, had they released a beta first. Just my 2 cents, but, again, I am one of the ones having major problems w/ my formerly working perfectly product. To all of you that are clicking along flawlessly...I'm jealous!
On Tuesday the 19th's podcast, one of your emailers, Daryl, claims that iTunes used deleted items as an excuse to require his upgrade.
Obviously, he's wrong.
He's got some files in his library that won't be copied over. That's a given. The iPod doesn't do h.264 nor some .mov files.
However, we can tell that Daryl is using his iTunes incorrectly. How?
If he's deleting the podcasts from the library, then iTunes won't complain about not being able to copy unfound files. Instead, he's using Windows Explorer or Finder to delete the file.
The error he's seen regarding the age of his iTunes refers not to any file types (there's been no change in file types compatible with iTunes or iPod) but to a new functionality in iTunes 7. Prior to iTunes 7, all of your files had to be in one location for iTunes to know anything about them, and if it didn't know where a file was, even if it was still on your system somewhere, until you changed the location of your iTunes Library (Preferences/Advanced/General). iTunes 7 now remembers if you've changed Library locations, and will know after you've changed your Library location that files in the original location are still there.
The error he's seeing is making an assumption that the files have been moved, and if he'd like to have access to them, he needs to upgrade to iTunes 7 so that he can keep his files in disparate locations.
But, really, what he needs to do is use iTunes correctly, and delete the file from the library and reply yes when it asks whether it should be thrown away. Then no error.
BTW, iTunes7 now provides an explicit list of files that can't be copied to the iPod, which is a nice (and overdue) feature.
If he doesn't want to be warned and refuses to use iTunes correctly, he could uncheck those podcasts that he's deleted so that they aren't synced to the iPod.
Another BTW: have there been ANY reports of iTunes issues on the Mac?
I did suffer the iPod-crashing (your podcast among two or three others from other sources) crashed my iPod, and an iPod restore fixed the problem I was seeing.
First of all... seriously. This new version, as pretty as it might look, is totally the jank (at least for me on Windows XP) I was seriously looking into grabbing one of those 24 inch iMacs later this year around the holiday season... but now I'm kinda not quite sure.
Anyway, to the topic of my post. So I haven't downloaded any new music in about three months until last night. And wow. Now I am kind of scared to. Periodicly, iTunes kept freezing during the downloads. I wasn't able to move any of the windows it had open, nor could I interact with any of them. I would go and grab a windows explorer window, drag it over the app, and the interface of iTunes would go away, leaving just solid white. Not cool.
During one download, I had to terminate the app, causing my download to be kinda messed up (No ID3 tag, album artwork, and no listing in the Purchased list)
I also got an episode of Desperate Housewives, and the video playback is *very* choppy. This could be because my video card died months ago, and I have been running on my integrated graphics since then (Intel Extreme 2)... but come on. It's pretty rediculous.
Also, does anyone else find that iTunes slows down a whole bunch when accessing your iPod? Response time is really sluggish.
Anyway yeah... I really really hate to bash on Apple because in the end... they do make some of the coolest stuff out there, but it's pretty frustrating when it doesn't work like it should. *sigh*
I just update software on my XP SP2 DELL XPS M170, and IPod. Itune is definitely slower, User Interface is cleaner. IPod 1.2 crashed when I play my Purchased Music Video.
I restoring my IPod software back to 1.1.
Such a pain...
Apple, if you are listening, fix the problem please.
