Close to buying LCD, what do I need with current setup?

by UR_PM - 9/18/06 5:59 AM

Hi:
I am planning to buy an LCD HDTV soon. First of all, I'm looking at either the Toshiba, Sony or Philips, either 37 or 40". Any recommendations there?

Currently I have an old Sony receiver (15 years) with Boston Acoustics bookshelf speakers, Sony 27" Trinitron TV (15 years old and still working great), Tivo and LiteOn DVD Recorder so all sound goes through the receiver and BA speakers.

A few questions:

Should I get rid of my receiver (do I NEED a new one?) and speakers and get a surround sound system?

Can I keep my current set up with a new LCD TV?
Or, do I need a new receiver and just keep the speakers?

I'm not likely to use the TV as a computer monitor.
I don't need or want anything bigger than a 40" and my current speakers sound great.

I have comcast digital cable box.

I'd appreciate any help. thanks.

TEN MILLION DOLLORS

ha ha Sounds like your receiver is an old pro logic unit so I would upgrade my amp first but before you spend all that extra cash on an amp with h.d.m.i. switching why not run all your vidio straight to the t.v. and audio to your amp Also I would contact Boston speakers and see if they have a 5.1. system that will match the 2 you have now for good 5.1 effect you must have matching speakers from the same manufactor good luck stewee

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
If I get a new receiver, can I still use the current Boston Acoustics as my only two speakers, if I DON'T want to do surround sound right now?

Any recommendations for a receiver? And, if the LCD TV has HDMI, do I even need a new receiver?

I thought the TV purchase and research was a lot, but when I start throwing in the research on my receiver combined with the new TV, it presents more of a challenge!

Also, I've also heard the Sharp Aquos is a good LCD TV....any recommendations on the Sharp, Sony, Toshiba or Philips?

The Philips and Sharp are comparably priced, with the Sony and Toshiba being a bit more.

I'm looking to spend around $1500, more or less on the TV....

What receivers should I be looking at, if I want to keep my current speakers. I'd prefer NOT to buy surround sound right now and wait a bit.....so
if I could get by with my current configuration, I'd prefer to do that.

Any other advice?
Yes, I have some good, if old, stereo equipment and have been a bit of a "hi fi" buff, but haven't needed anything new since all is working fine....

Wanted to know what kind of impact a new LCD TV would have on my current speaker receiver setup, if any.
Thanks again.

current setup

Taking one step at a time is good idea. You can keep your current audio setup untill your ready to go to a surround setup. Then get a new AV reciver and 5.1~7.1 speakers.
BA is one of the speaker brands I reconmend, check thier website. What is your budget for sound??? I recomend 60~70% of the budget for speakers and the rest for the AV reciver.

All of the TV makes you have listed are good, Sharp has put most of thier eggs in the LCD basket, so they try harder.
Have you gone to a store and looked at them? John

Current setup

Hi:
Thanks.

I looked at Philips and it looked great with reasonable price. I'm looking for 37", possibly 40, but 37 is a nice middle ground. So there are only about 4 brands that make that size (to date, I think).

I ddin't look at Sharp. I did look at Sony, Toshiba and Philips. I really liked the picture on the Philips, but I've heard mixed things about the Ambilight. On line reviewers seem to like it though.
Sales people didn't much care for it...but in Best Buy and Circuit City, I haven't found too many knowledgeable sales folks.

Also, do all LCDs pretty much have HDMI now?
Will I need additional cables with my current sound set up?

I will check out the BA site and thanks again!
What do you have and how do you like it?

Plasma

by sweetpappy - 9/20/06 4:03 AM In reply to: Close to buying LCD, what do I need with current setup? by UR_PM

I'd go with plasma. My 50" plasma pany ($2100) is a hell of a lot brighter, sharper and user-friendlier than my 42" Westinghouse. I like both but I love my pany, in fact, me and my family (wife and kids) neglect the west for the best.
as for speakers, I got rid of my big ass sonys and my bose for orbaudio. I sold my bose and was able to pickup better wire, 5 orb speakers, 5 orb wall/ceiling mounts and a mid-range receiver and the sound quality is WAY better than my previous setups. With my XB360 the surround on my new games blows my mind.
