Windows Vista will NOT let me format my hard drive

by a85 - 9/18/06 2:57 PM

I was giving Vista RC1 a trial, but I have come to the conclusion that my computer runs much better with XP. I wanted to downgrade back to XP. My Vista installation is on my primary and only hard drive. When I try to restart the computer with my XP CD in, it tells me that it cannot find my hard drive! When I boot normally though, my computer still works.

Some additional info:

My computer model is an HP Pavillion dv8000 laptop.
My XP Cd is a Media Center Ed. system restore DVD provided by HP with my computer.

Logically Vista shouldn't be doing that, but to be sure it's not an incompatability somewhere with the HP recovery system I'd suggest downloading the free program DBAN. You can burn the ISO to CD/DVD or save it to a floppy of flash drive. Either way, boot to DBAN instead of the HP recovery system and use it to reformat your hard drive. That will leave it in like-new condition, meaning you should have no problem using the recovery system to reinstall XP Media Center edition. Just be sure to backup all of your files first as there will be no turning back.

I am having the same problem with a Gateway running Vista. I have spent hours trying to figure out how to solve the problem. I have downloaded the file you recommended.

Thanks

Did you run DBAN?

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 4/5/07 8:49 PM In reply to: Vista formatting hard drive by CarolRiegel

After downloading DBAN you either need to burn the ISO to CD/DVD or copy the executable to a floppy, reboot your computer, and launch the utility from outside Windows. You can click here to review the README file, detailing various FAQs concerning its installation and use. If there is any particular part you are stuck on let us know.

Cannot get DBan to boot on Dell 9200

by gldngrl - 5/4/07 9:13 AM In reply to: The manufacturer doesn't matter... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

John, I have taken your advice and downloaded the dban exe to both usb and cd. Changed the boot order on the dell, however it still boots to OS vista. Can you help??

Sure...

I think the hangup is that you need to launch the executable from within Windows to create a bootable floppy/flash drive, not just copy the downloaded EXE to disc. The installer will erase the contents of the flash drive (necessary in order to boot from it reliably) and extract the necessary files to it. You can then reboot your computer, with the flash drive connected, and boot to it, provided your system ha the ability to boot from a flash drive. If not, you can do the same procedure using a floppy or download the ISO version of DBAN and use your preferred burning software to burn it to CD.

Hope this helps,
John

Create A Bootable CD Using Dban

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 1/26/08 4:50 PM In reply to: Vista PC format hard drive by drh503

Here's the link:

http://dban.sourceforge.net/

After visiting the site above, click on the link for downloading Dban for "CD & DVD Media" and it will download an .iso file to your computer.. Once there, use a program like Nero, Roxio, or IMGburn to unpack and burn the .iso (image file) to a CD.

Hope this helps.

dban won't run

by BobbyFixit - 9/8/09 12:22 PM In reply to: Create A Bootable CD Using Dban by Grif Thomas Moderator

I burned the ISO to a disc and re-ordered my boot sequence but dban still won't run. What could be the trouble? Is the program too old?

Post 14 of 57

Exactly how did you create that CD?

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 9/8/09 12:27 PM In reply to: dban won't run by BobbyFixit

Read http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_102-0.html?threadID=358135&tag=forums06;forum-threads and many replies later they found the right way to make the CD from the .ISO.

Hint: We don't put the ISO on the CD, we create the CD from the .ISO.
