Basic... yes outdated... no

by john.mm - 9/27/06 9:02 AM In reply to: A very basic video card by anolehippy

Might be worth upgrading soon, x800s are fantasic value.

I upgraded my old PC to a 128mb x800 and a Sempron for as little as £180

The RAM was a extra £65

512Mb

by Astix - 9/15/06 2:56 PM In reply to: How much video memory does your graphics card have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

512Mb on a GeForce 7900GTX; although as a previous poster said- graphics memory is a seriously misleading attribute to rate a cards quality by.

Personally I look at the memory capacity *after* examining the graphical processor and chipset specifications.

For example, my last graphics card was a GeForce 6600GT- which generally could be bought in two flavours- a 128Mb card or a 256Mb card.

However, if the options were between a 6600GT 256Mb or a 6800GT with 128Mb (although I'm not sure there was such a card made, I think all 6800s came with 256 minimum) then one should opt for the faster chipset rather than the increase in memory.

6800gl

by jweideman3 - 9/15/06 3:03 PM In reply to: How much video memory does your graphics card have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

running two 6800gl 256 each on and sli I do a lot of video stuff "news" rendering could be faster over 41mins but to go the expence of say 7900gl x 2 yet
prices are comming down however they'll come down more
or come out with somthing better,
in a year by that time I may redo it all motherboard processor everything now running 2 250 gigs hard drives I'd like to go to 3 500gigs hard drives
maybe windows 64x
the only way is bigger and better I rebuild every two years this the frist year on this dell xps 600
I'm using studio 10 and pennical no doubt will have somthing better
gamers would no doubt think this is a waste I do no gaming just video for TV.
have a great day.

Why so much memory?

by glovesq - 9/15/06 3:16 PM In reply to: How much video memory does your graphics card have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have a GeForce 6800 with 512 MB ram. I know that ram is mostly used to store texture maps in video games. Bitmap graphics are memory intensive.

In a non-video gaming environment, what is that ram used for? Someone told me that various application windows are stored in the video card for ease of switching to and fro. I still don't see it needing that much ram unless using Photoshop and the video car stores all the bitmapped graphics in each of its windows.

not much difference

by jweideman3 - 9/27/06 11:26 AM In reply to: Why so much memory? by glovesq

however in my case my videos would render faster.
I no its a silly reason for the expence .
unless your making 10-12 dvd's in one day instead of all weekend i'm sure some might question that on rendering speed but there is a difference,

and dvd quality is somewhat improved I won't make a change until next year when I do a complete rebuild .
thank you.

1 GB

by riteshr - 9/15/06 3:19 PM In reply to: How much video memory does your graphics card have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

1 GB (2 X 512 MB because of the Dual GPU) on the NVidia 7950GX2.Amazing gameplay, blazing fast framerates, once you see 3D rendering on a PC , console HD gaming somehow doesn't quite measure up :). Don't know how much the memory helps but it sure doesn't hurt.

ATI FireGL

by ranron - 9/15/06 6:45 PM In reply to: How much video memory does your graphics card have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I'm a graphic design hobbyist and I'm learning to use Maya right now, so having a good workstation card is very important. I use the ATI FireGL V7350 with 1GB of VRAM. This amount of memory may sound like overkill, but if anyone who has ever tried graphic design, they know that depending on the CPU for rendering is a headache especially when the number of polygons reaches into the millions and that graphics RAM actually is used well. These programs are heavily dependant of vertex shaders, so those gaming cards are not ideal. In fact, the workstation card despite clocked slower than gaming cards, the workstation cards run Maya [and the like] much faster.

The card is not very good for gaming, as it is an OpenGL card (all workstation cards are OpenGL).

My laptop a Lenovo T60p has a FireGL V5200. Its not ask fast as the V7350 and it has only 256 MB, but likewise to its desktop workstation sibling, it runs Maya [and the like] a lot faster than other cards.

PNY GeForce 7300 GS with 256 megabytes of VRAM.

by farhansyed - 9/15/06 8:48 PM In reply to: How much video memory does your graphics card have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX620, and my graphics card is a PNY GeForce 7300 GS with 256 megabytes of video memory. Although this computer was not made and sold for video gaming, and I mainly use it for business applications, it does run modern games very well, especially at my monitor's resolution. Of course my monitor is a Compaq Business Series 15" flat CRT, and its maximum resolution is 1024 x 768, but I usually run it at 800 x 600.

laptop graphic card

by celbertin - 9/15/06 10:22 PM In reply to: How much video memory does your graphics card have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have the nVidia GeForce Go 7900 (512MB!)
got it with my toshiba satellite p100 laptop
does any other laptop users here have powerful graphic cards on their laptops? how has the experience been of having such power on the go? I'm a heavy gamer, and having a laptop with such a graphic card makes going to LAN parties a lot easier, don't have to carry around a hige tower, screen, keyboard... I just take the laptop and mouse.
