I have used the free version of Zone Alarm for many years now.
I always take advantage of updates whenever they become available.
I hope that the installation of version 6.5.737.000 will solve your problem.
I noticed problems with ZA 6.5 immediately after upgrading from the 6.1.744 release months ago. I saw SIGNIFICANTLY slower startup time for Windows as well as improper exiting of ZoneAlarm during Windows shutdown. These 2 issues were noted by others on the ZA forums. I am not sure if these have been resolved as I've stayed with ZA 6.1.744.
I also get these "cannot find server" messages now and again in FF. But usually I retry and the page reconnects without a hitch. I'm not surprised to hear that 6.5 has issues though.
I really wish ZA would fix these problems.
I hafta give credit where it's due. I believe it was Grif Thomas who gave the advice to remain calm, and wait till ZA fixed thier problem with version 722 before jumping ship. I had just started following Cnet and he made me a fan. like the man said, hope it helps.
I know I asked this earlier, but maybe with the discussion moving along as well as it has here, someone will be able to respond. I appreciate all the great replies. Right now I am using a free firewall that I never heard of before, but has received an excellent review - Filseclab Personal Firewall - (funny name, but it is working well). I downloaded ZA 6.5.737.000 but I disabled it for now.
I have two questions:
Can anyone comment on how these two free firewalls compare to one another? I know that ZA is the more popular and better known, but Filseclab seems like a sleeper. Also, can you use two firewalls at the same time on a PC, like you can antivirus and antispy ware? Thanks!
I can not comment on Filseclab compared to ZA but I can tell you running 2 firewalls is not advisable hence most firewalls that install disable Windows Default Firewall so they don't fight with each other.
This is strange... I am currently using 6.5.722 with none of the problems I see mentioned. There is an upgrade? Time to get the latest and greatest.
I have been with Zone Alarm for years. I use ZA Pro on my web server. I dont recall where I heard of it first but I think it was at GRC.com many years ago where it was tested and found to be the best. Good enough for me. It is still the best.
Zone Alarm Security Suite has performed very well for me over the last two years. I used their free firewall for a year before that and had no trouble as well. I left Norton and McAfee for the reasons you cite for Zone Labs. On top of this, I added Zone Alarm Security Suite to my brother's new PC about 18months ago and he's had no issues. Perhaps I've been his tech supoport though; I have to remind him to 'train' his firewall each time a new website is accessed. I also have to remind him to shut down his Windows session daily too and, perhaps, that's part of the problem for others who don't restart their Windows session often enough. Rememaber, Microsoft Windows relies on a restart, or shut down - start up, to update the Windows Registry; but, other software may also rely on this session restart to access updates through their own websites. Each sofware package you use, including ZoneAlarm, relies on you to set, or change the default, options for the specific software package. You may want to select new upodating options for your Zone Alarm 'free' firewall to be sure it updates more often than the default period. good luck - Jay
had the same problem, but could'nt open anything, could not remove zome alarm so i had to do a system restore
to remove it completly.
have you tried to change your settings on zone alarm to allow connection, if not you may be better off re-installing zone alarm.
i too suffered with problems with zone alarm basic prog,
try to uninstall zone alarm, i had problems with the program True vector which is part of the zone alarm package, i had to start the computer in safe mode and turn off the true vector connection then uninstall zone alarm. Then re-install Zone alarm to which i have never had a problem with, Since to this i have upgraded to zone alarm pro cause its a top defence program.
I've had a few problems with ZA over the last 2 or 3 years. But for a free program, it's great.
I've found that when doing an update, when given the choice of an update install or a clean install, I rarely if ever have a problem other than retraining if I use the clean install.
And of course if there is a problem watch for the update fix from ZA.
No one seems to have mentioned the problem with ZA 6.5 where it fills your Restore Point folders with .rdb files. I thought I had a rootkit until I worked out what was happening, by which time my drive free space had shrunk by 8GB. See eg:

Contrary to the messages of support posted here, ZA have been slow to fix this one. It was still unfixed in 6.5.737 so I've gone back to 6.1.
I helped out my nephew as his friend was having problems with a built up AMD Sempron system. After re-installing XP Pro SP2 and all the security updates plus any programs he might find useful. I installed AVG and Zone Alarm all was working well.
I did all that about a month ago....
Then 3 days ago he was reporting that his connection was acting up. He could dial out and surf for a while about 20 mins and then it would say "couldn't find server". I updated his AVG and any other programs I had newer versions of. But then I came across Zone Alarm it was an older version & it wasn't loading up yet it was installed on the system.
He did say it was saying it was out of date so when trying to install the newer version it wouldn't. I was having problems also uninstalling it and all the errors pointed to zpy.dll. That's located in the windows/system32/zone alarm folder. I couldn't do anything apart from delete what was left of zone alarm except that folder as it's write protected. I have to go back when I can and delete the folder above in safe mode. And hopefully I can install the newer version I have and sort out this mess.
without any problems. Zone Alarm acknowledged there was a problem with the previous version and issued an update 6.5.731. I don't find it a resource hog any more than any other app and it passes the GRC test with flying colours everytime.
So no-one's accumulating an .rdb file in their current Restore Point folder every minute or 2 as a result of running Zone Alarm 6.5.xxx then?

I used ZA free for a couple of years but then found out how much more detailed the controls were in the
paid-for version. I bought one copy and set it up
on my main workstation. It drove me crazy. I didn't
understand most of the various sections and so I just
started to play with it. It took awhile but I
eventually got a handle on it and now have five copies on five machines. It costs some money but I have had
very few problems with it over all. As I recall, I
struggled quite a bit with the free version when I first started using it as well. I suggest that if
a person is having trouble, use the help sections and continue to ask questions. Meanwhile, the Program
will keep the uglies out of your machine and that
alone makes it all worth-while.
