Help want to reformatt and install xp home on my computer but cant get it to boot off xp cd have tried making the six floppy disc but that dosent work either loads first floppy then wont go any further.Have tried floppies and xp cd in another computer both work fine.(Disconected all other ide drives and it will boot off the disc)Have also tried a different drive still wont boot Have the hdd set as master and dvd rom set as slave with the dvd rom as number 1 on boot priority.Dont know what else i can do any ideas???
Slave is only for drives on the same IDE channel (Ribbon)
Ihave a dvd rom and a cdrw on same cable but it wont boot off either in bios cdrw is master and the dvd is slave on secondry slave/master what do i have to change??
What kind of PC is this that only has one IDE channel?
Is your HD an IDE (ribbon) or SATA (hard-wired)?
If they are for some reason on the same channel (there should be 1 for HD & another for DVD)
Just go into Set-Up & set the Boot order to boot from CD (DVD) 1st
Have already set the bios to boot from dvd first two ide channels primary master runs my hard drive primary slave has nothing attached secondry ide master runs my cdrw secondry ide slave my dvd rom I set bios to boot from my cdrw first just continues to windows then tried my dvd my dvd a message comes up press any key to boot from disc I press spacebar but it just contnues into windows and starts up then only way I can get it to go into windows setup is by starting the installation iin windows but it just goes on over the top of the old one it wont let me delete the partition and reformatt because the system files are on that hard drive
Mabey your bootable disk is corrupt?
But it does sound as though it`s not booting for a reason other than that.
It is possible to copy the i386 directory to your disk then burn it to a cd and then go through the tedium of using a 98 bootdisk with ''fdisk'' to make and format the new partition.
Then you have to copy the files from the cd to the new ''c:'' and access ''winnt.exe'' from there.
Im sure you could copy the i386 straight from the XP cd but im not 100% sure.
As long as your i386 directory on the xp cd aint corrupt it is possible to salvage things.
Long way for a shortcut but it has worked for me before.
good luck
No not corupt it boots up in my other computer no problem and it boots up if i dont have any other drive connected
I had a CD-R and it was the slave and my master was the CD-ROM. Later, I bought a CD/BVD-/+ROM and itis my master now. Later, I bought a CD/DVD-/+R/RW and had to set it up as the slave. The CD-ROM and the CD/DVD-/+ROM are a read only Drives. I won't turn my burner into the master and the ROMS into slaves. It sounds like you have them backwards. As for your WINXP CD, it did work on another machine and the same for your floppies do. It seems like the problem is in your setup. On the rear going from left to right, there are 3 double set of pins. first is C for Cable, middle one should have M for Master and the right one would have S is Slave on the Right. If you have a sound wire, that connects to your DVD-ROM - not the burner. Also, make certain that the correct one is used for music. Darrell L.
Its a ide ribbon hard drive/ cable it custom built 2.43 p4 the only way i have been able to boot straight from disc is to dissconect all drives except dvd rom drive
you don't have your IDE channels backwards??
If you have them reversed it will do exactly what you dscribe.
The cable to the inner most part of the motherboard should be IDE0 (HD) with the outer most being IDE1 (CD)
My mainboard dosent have ide 0 has ide channel 1,2,3 1 and 2 can run a slave and master and 3 just a master have hard drive connected to ide 1 as per mainboard manual instructions and the two cd/dvd drives connected to ide 2 it is a msi 655 max fisr mainboard
connected hard drive up to an external enclosure conected enclosure to my other computer and formatted it with admin tools.Booted straight up from disc and is going through the xp installation as I speak will try booting off the disc once xp installed thanks for your comments and will let ya know if it is fixed
Well its not fixed still have to connect to external enclosure to format before booting off disc.It simply will not boot off cd if there is anything on the hard drive.
