If you take a look at these 2 up-converting players their faceplate look the same and even their features. Both are also Divx player. The only difference is their digital cable output; Oppo has DVI while Philips uses HDMI. Are they made by one company but with different name badge? Any help on this?
The 971H was the first DVD player from Oppo and they now have the 970HD which uses HDMI output. Not sure if Oppo makes the Phillips player. It could also be that Oppo and Phillips use another companies shell and they install their own electronics. If that's the case, I personally would go with Oppo. I own the 970HD and so far I am very happy with everything but the remote. The print on the remote is too tiny. I have a tough time seeing it in a dimmed room. I loved the remote on my Toshiba, but the Tosh was inferior on layer changes and had trouble playing some DVDs.
What's the optimal settings that works for you for the 971? Have you adjusted brightness, color, picture and audio settings?
I have the 970HD, but so far I have only adjusted the brightness by one increment and all others have been left the same. I need to spend more time analyzing the setups I have with my Video Essentials DVD, but in a quick initial setup, these settings are what I have.
