How much storage do you carry on your person?

by christianboy65 - 9/8/06 4:33 AM

I just recently started toting a 20 GB 2.5" external hard drive around in addition to everything else I carry daily. It made me wonder what all the devices and gizmos on my person (not counting laptops) add up to in terms of storage. So let's see:

20 GB HD.
60 GB iPod.
2 GB Xacti
256 MB Treo

Total: 82.256 GB. Nifty! How about you?

Gig Index

by tony10r10 - 9/8/06 7:02 AM In reply to: How much storage do you carry on your person? by christianboy65

What do we call this number? I vote for "Gig Index".

512 MB in an SD card in my smartphone
128 MB onboard the phone
128 MB flash drive
256 MB flash drive
512 MB flash drive

Then there is:

60 GB IoGear USB hard drive
80 GB hard drive in my laptop

So then, 141.5 is my normal daily GIG Index.

I was counting my laptop bag, which is a bit overloaded. But sometimes it's 'on my person' when I am physically carrying it (and not dragging it on its wheels).

Down with belly bags. Or, sometimes called a** purses.

2.5 Gig

by cardsbb9 - 9/8/06 9:45 AM In reply to: How much storage do you carry on your person? by christianboy65

Two gig Nano and a 1/2 gig thumb drive.

I remember when it was so cool to carry a 1.4 K floppy in your dress shirt pocket (right next to the 7" wide necktie).

My floppy had a lable with two hand-drawn sneakers on it.

(do you-all know why the sneakers?)

3.5 gig

by cardsbb9 - 9/8/06 9:49 AM In reply to: 2.5 Gig by cardsbb9

I forgot the 1 gig SD card in my 7 megapixel camera.

Wow, a whole gig of memory on something smaller than a large postage stamp.

Sheesh.

Why why?

by stgoaljs - 9/9/06 2:42 AM In reply to: 2.5 Gig by cardsbb9

You have me hanging on a thread here! Why the sneakers?

For me: 60 gig iPod
128 mb phone
1 gig flash drive
512 SD card in camera

running total: approx. 61 1/2 gigabytes!

Sneaker-net is the term....

by cardsbb9 - 9/9/06 4:56 AM In reply to: Why why? by stgoaljs

Before wireless became popular, before everyone had a router in their home, before thumb drives.....

You had people carrying around floppy disks in order to move data from one PC to another. That means the "transport layer" of all this data moving back and forth was the sneakers on the feet of the people carrying the disks in their pocket. So, it was called the "sneakernet".

So the disk I had dedicated to carrying in my shirt pocket had sneakers drawn on them.

1GB to 5GB to 65GB

by Dhalgren - 9/8/06 1:53 PM In reply to: How much storage do you carry on your person? by christianboy65

I always have my 1 GB USB drive in my pocket. If I'm carrying my Nano (more often than not), that's another 4GB but I only use it for music and podcasts, not file transfer. Finally, If I have my backpack (normally if I'm going to work) I will have my 60GB 2.5" hard drive in a USB 2.0 enclosure (I use this mostly for transfering .ISO files around ;-])

a few items...

by shawnlin - 9/8/06 2:37 PM In reply to: How much storage do you carry on your person? by christianboy65

in the office, I've got a basic 128Mg USB flash drive.

Personal stuff: a 512Mb and 1Gb USB flash drives. And a 30 Gb iPod if I need it to be a storage device. When I'm traveling, I've got the iPod as well as one or both USB flash drives (just in case).
