I have a Konica/Minolta Dimage A200 digicam (8.0 megapixels, 7x optical zoom). Excellent little (for a 7x zoom lens) camera.
I do want to upgrade to an 8-10 megapixel SLR though down the road.
I'm currently working in Iraq as a quality consultant. This small camera with it's high definition is perfect for my work. The large, bright screen works very well in the Iraqi sun.
I have a Pentax Optio 4si, it has 4 megapixels, and it works just fine. I don't use the digital zoom for the same reson that most people give, I don't like grainy pictues.
I've never needed more. I shoot @ 1024 x 768 & seldom need more. This gives me a 5.12'' x 6.83'' printout on most inkjet printers, which I can make into a 4'' x 6'' print (approx.) easily.
If I were going to need an 8" x 10", I'd use a higher resolution, like 2048 x 1360 or more. But this is VERY seldom needed.
It also has a 4.4X optical zoom. My wife's newer HP R818 has a 5X optical zoom and 5 megapixel max. resolution. I've set it to 1280 x 1024.
Why buy a higher resolution camera then set it for a low resolution? That's like buying a sports car and setting the cruise control at 55 mph. Most pro's recommend using the highest resolution then down-sizing as needed. Up-sizing is not effective.
Also, when you use a lower resolution setting, the camera will save it using a lossy format ie. JPEG - so unless you like low resolution pictures that may be un-croppable, you are under-utilizing your camera. Use the highest resolution first, then downsize. Have fun cropping and utilizing the potential of digital!
Cheers
I use a Sony 3.2 Cybershot and love it. It makes great pictures and my only dissatisfaction comes from the slow, sluggish shutter speed. Please Sony, do something about that!
I needed a digital camera with a good Macro system for close up shots of opals. I know very little about the fine art of photogaphy, but this camera has given me some really good photos of my stones. I am still learning how to use it, there are so many settings, it seems more complicated than my computers, but takes super photos.

My HP 735 is almost same as new, and does a very good job. But it looks like I'm well behind the crowd already! I bought mine in an extremely good deal bundled with a printer, SD card and photo paper a couple of Christmases ago, so I've been very pleased. However, with the prices I'm seeing on new cameras with twice the resolution as mine (and then some), I might just get bitten by the bug to update.
This was one of the first ''super zooms'', with 10x optical zoom. It does a beautiful job with its 4.1 megapixel resolution, on everything from close shots to long ones!
I've taken thousands of pics with this camera, and hope to take thousands more. People I've sent photo albums to have been extremely impressed with its results.
BTW, never used the 4x digital zoom except to look at distant things while the camera was on a tripod (never took any pictures with it).
I'd definitely buy Olympus again!
Recently aquired a Vivitar 8400 series 1, point and shoot, with more features than I really need. What a great little camera ! 8 MP really makes a difference when I set the quality to "fine" and the normal setting takes great everyday pics. First Vivitar I've owned and certainly won't be the last.
from high to low:
7.1 megapixels - nikon coolpix 7600 (compact)
5.35 megapixel - Hewlet packard photosmart 945c(SLR 8x zoom)
3.3 migapixel - Mustek DV3000 (minidigicam/camcorder(only digital zoom)
1.3 megapixel - Sony Dsc-p20 (only digital zoom)
1.2 megapixel - Sony ericsson k700i)(cellphone)(only digital zoom)
analogue zoom is of course better but i would not like to see digital cameras without digital zoom , because in some circumstances it is essential.
I have a canon Powershot A520 4XMegathings X4 Optical Zoom...I am an expert at point, shoot and hope it turns out allright.
I use the digital zoom only when looking at what I have captured, so I can work out if I can use my computer to get rid of the extraneous garbage in the background/ middle ground/ foreground.
Quite a nice camera. I picked up a couple extras for it. Now, with Konica leaving the cameras to Sony, I wonder how many pieces will be available.
Still love the camera. It offers quite a few features (see my review elsewhere), & I've got some nice trick shots with it.
I went with the mural making 8, a friend of mine another brands 6 & it takes great shots, she loves that her's is small. Not that I'll print many murals, but the depth of the picture is most fantastic!
Hope this helps.
Own and love my Olympus E-1 DSLR. 5MP is more than enough to print beautiful prints up to 16"X20". I think the race to cram more pixels on the same size sensors is probably over. The new competition is lower noise at higher ISO's. Shop for features, servicing dependability and price and forget about the number of pixels.
