8 megapixels or more
I don't have a digital camera
6 megapixels
12MP SVP Camera. Love it.
It is not really 12MP. On the camera it says "Effective 3.1 MP - MAXIMUM 12 MP" Sorry to say but this $177 piece of... well its worth a whole lot less that its price.
I have 6 megapixels. My older Toshiba PDR-M70 has 3.3mp. Both provide excellent results and have manual controls as well.

6 Mega Pixels
6 mp is large enough for most people unless you print 8X10 or larger, or you crop your photos. Also, If you don't have a high-end printer more mega pixels won't make that much difference. I have a 6 mp Nikon d-100 and would like to upgrade to the 8 mp D-200. Steve...
I don't think there is any need for a digital zoom.
Great camera. The only negative for me is that there is no remote shutter control (either wired or wireless) available for this camera. Excelllent pictures, good image stabilization, and good battery life.
...once you get past 8 megapixels. That's why I have two Canon 1D Mark II's that shoot at up to 8.5 frames per second with no shutter lag.
"It's the speed, not the resolution... ...once you get past 8 megapixels."
Wouldn't that depend on what you are shooting?
I do wedding, theater, and other portrait and "people" photography, as well as landscapes.
I have no need for 8.5 FPS, but you can bet that when I'm wanting to make a 16X20 or larger print, suitable for framing, that every megapixel is precious.
Clearly, based on the sales figures for high-end, high-resolution cameras (and medium format camera backs that are upwards of 22 megapixels), I am not alone in needing the highest possible resolution compatible with acceptable noise levels, withou needing high frame speeds.
When shooting freelance for various publications like ESPN The Magazine or SportsIllustrated or the Sporting News, a 4MP frame will fill a double-truck spread...EASILY! Do not worry about megapixels, that's the last thing you need to worry about when buying a camera. All the camera manufactures are in a megapixel race to see who can win...which Canon is by the way.
Canon's highest megapixel camera the 1ds mark 2 16 megapixel camera is not the winner. The Hasselblad H2D-39 is definitely up there, as far as i know, this 39 megapixel camera is the highest pro camera out there. Of course, though if you're talking about just consumer cameras then i'm not sure who would win. The canon 1ds mark 2 is definitely more consumer oriented then the Hasselblad camera, but it's by no means at all a consumer camera. Probably the highest megapixel consumer camera is either the 5d (if you consider that consumer) or the huge range of 10 megapixel cameras out there.
Oh, and 4mp might be enough for espn... but not if you want to crop at all. my 8mp 20d gives me the freedom to crop away 1/3 of the photo and still make impressive 12x18 prints.
I have an ancient 4 megapixel camera. At best, I receive polite looks of sympathy when I mention it. Yet it will blow-up wonderfully,at least to 8"x10". Bless you.
