Need Help Installing Vista RC1

by hoosiertrucker - 9/2/06 10:05 PM

I guess I was one of the lucky one to get to download a copy of Vista RC1 public release, but I can't seem to install it. This is the file name:

vista_5536.16385.060821-1900_vista_rc1_x86fre_client-lr1cfre_en_dvd.iso

When I double-click it, WinAce Archiver v2.61 open and says that the file does not appear to be a valid archive. I probably need to run the file at bootup, but I can't figure out how to get my machine to recognise it as a startup disc. Can anyone help me out? Does this have anything to do with the fact that it says dvd.iso at the end of the filename, and that I am unable to get the dvd drive files from Dell or the original seller? Please help. Thanx.

I'm no expert in Windows Vista, but until John or any of the others arrive to rescue you, I have a couple of thoughts.

1] It shouldn't matter that it says dvd.iso at the end of the file name. If you burned it to a CD, then it should open as a CD.

2] But did you burn it as an iso image, or did you burn it just as a data file? It needs to be burned as an iso image.

3] If the instructions at Microsoft say it has to be booted up, then that is what you need to do. But is your BIOS set to recognise your CD ROM as a boot device? You will need to reboot your computer and as soon as it restarts, press the F key that will open your BIOS. Your manual will say which key to press, but I believe it is either DEL or F11/F12.

However, take all of this with a pinch of salt, as other people here will have the correct method(s).

Good luck.

Mark

Thanks for the reply, Mark.

I did burn it to a CD-RW disc in it's original ''dvd.iso'' format. I definately need to check my bios settings to make sure I didn't disable the boot from cd rom option.

As for Microsoft, I couldn't tell you what their website says, as I'm not one of their beta testers. I've done some beta testing in the past, but not for MS. I got the copy from a post on Gizmodo that allowed up to I believe either 10,000 or 100,000 downloads of the RC1 by the general public.

Thanks again for the help. I will try your suggestions and hopefully someone else will come forward with something else if this doesn't work.

Btw; if it helps any, I have a copy of isobuster on my h/d...for what it's worth.

Another Option

by terryparker - 9/3/06 11:34 AM In reply to: RE: Options; by hoosiertrucker

Download a program called UltraISO and install it. Download it from "http://www.download.com/UltraISO-Premium/3000-2646_4-10568272.html?tag=lst-0-1". Then open UltraISO and browse to the location of the ISO file and open it. Then insert a DVD into a DVD/RW drive and burn it.
I think your problem is that you tried to burn it to a CD with a CD/RW drive as you mentioned, that will not work as a CD only has 700mb of space and a DVD has 4.8gb of space and the ISO file is 2.61gb.
Hope this helps!! Let me know!!

Aside from that...

1.) What you have is not RC1...build 5536 is pre-RC1, the last build to be released prior to RC1. RC1 is available to subscribers only right now and will be made publicly available soon, currently scheduled for September 7th (Thursday).

2.) TechXpert is right on about the CD-RW issue...the ISO simply won't fit on a CD, meaning if you did in fact burn it to a CD-RW then most of the data is missing...that's why it won't work.

3.) UltraISO can work but you would have to buy it...the free version only handles the first 300MB, and Vista 5536 is far more than that.

4.) Daemon Tools is a free solution you can use if you don't have a DVD burner. It can create a virtual DVD-ROM drive and mount the ISO, meaning you can install that way and never have to burn a disk. Just install Daemon Tools, then right-click the icon placed in the system tray and mount the Vista ISO to the pre-created virtual drive.

Hope this helps,
John

The easiest way

by slick62 - 9/3/06 8:28 PM In reply to: Aside from that... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

Simply Get an empty DVD, drop it in your DVD Drive, download this free CD DVD Burner (Compaible with Windows XP and Vista): http://windowsvistageeks.org/Downloads/burner12.zip

execute the program (its only 570Kb big) exe file....

After openning the burner, select the Vista .iso file you downloaded and click BURN ISO... That's it it will create the Vista 5536 DVD you need to install Vista in your system.... ;)

Good Luck... Hope you make it now :)

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, John! That's exactly what I need to know!!!

I don't have a DVD Burner drive just a DVD-Rom Drive, and like I said in my first post, I don't have the proper drivers for that.

I did try to burn it to CD-RW, but when I ran it, I got the same reaction that I got when I double-cliocked the file directly.

Also, now that you mention it, I do only have pre-RC1...sorry about the confusion.

I'm off to download daemon tools, and install vista.

Incidentally, since it's not a final release, I probably should install it on a partition, right?

Thanks again.

Randy

Yes...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 9/4/06 8:28 AM In reply to: RE: Aside from that... by hoosiertrucker

Actually you have to have a partition in order to install just one OS, but I'm assuming you mean a second partition for a dual-boot setup. In that case it would be a wise idea, that way if you find a program does not work on Vista you can switch back over to XP and proceed as usual.

Let us know if you have any problems.

Actually, John I do need more help....

I downloaded Daemon Tools and installed it OK, but when I try to mount an image file, and select the Vista file, it says: "unable to mount image. Invalid image file."

Could this have anything to do with the fact that I was fooling around with the file with Isobuster trying to get it to install prior to getting on this forum?

I think it's just about time to give up trying...

Thanks again for the help.

Stick with what you have

by wyohman - 9/5/06 1:39 PM In reply to: RE: Yes...; by hoosiertrucker

If you don't have the hardware or technical expertise to install this beta software, I recommend you stick with what you have. Software of this quality is not ready for normal usage and will only frustrate you.

Cheers.

Seldom would I wish to discourage anyone from expanding their computer experience, but in this case I must wholeheartedly agree with wyohman. Fact; you don't have a DVD burner which is the primary requirement for burning the install of the Vista Betas and Pre RC1. And no, you cannot break it into 700MB parts to create an installation disk with a CD burner. And no, you cannot install it from the ISO copy even with an Iso extraction tool as the Betas are strictly clean install software.
And if all of the above are incorrect, the ISO must be burned to DVD from the image, creating an install disk. And if none of this is a problem, prepare for an endless search for drivers. Wait for the Vista release.

Hang on...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 9/5/06 4:54 PM In reply to: RE: Yes...; by hoosiertrucker

It sounds like your ISO has been corrupted. However, the good news is that RC1 will be released publicly on Thursday. Just hang on for another two days and grab a copy of RC1, which offers users higher performance, fewer bugs, much more hardware/software compatibility, and a toned-down version of UAC.
