Speakers and MP3 Player Stereo Replacement Suggestions

by RushFan22 - 9/4/06 1:32 PM

I'd like any suggestions regarding an MP3 player and speaker system so that I can get rid of my clunky old stereo and replace it with just the player and speakers.

Audio quality is most important; I won't be using the MP3 player much with headphones since it will be a home stereo replacement.

I was interested in the Klipsch iFI but it seems geared strictly for the ipod.

I'm concered about sound quality because of the mini jack stero out. On some players, this produces a lot of noise.

Toshiba, Apple, etc. all have proprietary audio out so I'd like some speakers that will outlast any player.

Suggestions appreciated on any combination of players/speakers.

Thanks!

It depends on how loud you want to play your music -- if it's just for one room -- I highly recommend the Edifier MP3000 speaker system available from Radio Shack -- it also comes with a travel case and, with 9Watts of power, it has enough thump to bother people in the next room. I have listened to many MP3 speakers systems, and I was stunned by this <$100 system. Especially, considering the portability.

Alternatively, if the speakers you have now can be driven with 15watts on each side... Think Geek has a wireless digital amplifier system, so you don't need to run wires across the room. http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/862c/

Both these systems require AC power, and are connected to the earphone jack of the player.

You may consider these a bit expensive, but they're supposed to be good. About $1300 a pair.

The iFi is awesome!

I got an iFi about 5 months ago and I absolutely love it. I do have an iPod and that works awesome with it. When my friends stop by, they all love the way it sounds and want one for themselves. My sister-in-law loved it so much, I ended up buying one for her for her birthday.

The iFi also has a line-in plug. I actually have it hooked up to my TV & DVD player. I run my TV sound through it for better sound and low-end when watching movies, and it will play CD's or MP3 discs from my DVD player. It sounds awesome and I don't notice any extra noise.

I've never tried it with another type of MP3 player so I can't speak for that, but I think the line-in works great.

The iFi was my replacement to buying a new component style stereo system. Saves a lot of space also.
