UNQUESTIONABLY the new SONY LCD's BRAVIA line. Sizes range from 40'' - 46'' in your price range (okey a little more depending on size or features.) Then again you could go for the PANNY PX600U for more bucks.
Good shopping,
river.
Proton 32" lcd ... compare the spec's with a sony/panasonic you will be impressed, under $1000.00, I got one.
I bought a Dell 32in LCD flat panel about 6 months ago. Got it for under 1600. Two HD tuners built in. All the connections you'll ever need. I did notice that dark scenes can be a little too dark. Takes a little adjusting there. But, all in all, I think it's the best bang for you buck. I will say this. Considering the price, I'd probably go for the 42in.
I understand the cost of a top quality TV can be excessive, but prices should fall---NOT go up in the next 6 months. A new technology called "SED" ( a joint venture between Canon and Toshiba) is already in the works and should be available within the next six months. The prices will be high but the new technology should also push older prices DOWN. Keep in mind that currently in the USA, only 1080i is available but true 1080P is coming very soon. Most current high-resolution TV's are only 720p. You may want to wait so you can future-proof your new purchase. My 50" Sony (SXRD) is a full 1080p capable TV. Hitachi and Mitsubishi have new 1080p models. By January of 2007, you should see 1080p models for under $2000.00. Plasma generates a LOT of heat! A cheap LCD can have a terrible "screen door" effect. Sony's SXRD (50" or 60") has none of these problems. Currently, the 50" Sony SXRD (LCOS Technology) can be purchased for around $2500.00. Prices should drop to your level within the next six months. Remember----with electronics-----you get what you pay for!
I was told that the panasonic 42px60u was a good Plasma. And also a good deal as well. I dont plan on buying a plasma sometime next year. I heard of the sed and read some things about it. I think it suppose to be better than a LCD or a Plasma. I beleive the SED are suppose to be as good as a CRT or better, but thin as a Plasma or LCD's.
I also wanted to know if you know anything about LCD monitors for pc's. I thinking about getting a 20 inch or so, widescreen lcd monitor. Do you recommend any paticular brands? I like to play games and watch dvd movies as well.
I thought SED sets were due out at semi affordable prices for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. They were originally due out this year but because of astronomical prices, they held back. In my opinion, don't wait. Most people in this forum are always price concious so I don't know why some expect to get the sucessor to plasmas for about the same cash. OLED and SEDs will not be at your local Best Buy or Circuit City anytime soon so don't hold your breath.
I dont'plan on waiting for those new techs. I know their going to be way out of my price range. The person that said to wait, he meant by wait for those new tech tv's to come out first then plasmas' and LCD tv's are going to be even cheaper.
...The SED displays are a lot farther out than that. Get a proven display that with Panny is in its 9th generation. If someone wants to wait for 6 months or a year or more, then the only one to wait for would be the 1080p plasma, nothing else will equal it, however, it will be only SLIGHTLY better in PQ than the 768p!

Stew will be buried with his 72" set. You look up rear projection sets and you find a picture of Stewie grinning alongside his set. He is the resident expert on those types of displays.
Hot off the Internet:
"Update March 8, 2006 - Toshiba Corporation and Canon Inc. today announced that they will start the first stage of mass production of SED panels in July 2007 and launch SED TVs in the 4Q of calendar year 2007"

That 2008 release is to coincide with the Beijing Olympics. Be prepared for a heavy, heavy marketing campaign.
Hey I just posted a new thread here's a link. Let me know what you think. http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?forumID=60&threadID=224857&messageID=2354826&tag=mcnt#2354826
Also i bought a panny th42px60u. I'm happy with it now I just need a upscaling dvd recorder. That's what the new thread is about. Let me know about your opinion. Also what are the difference between the pro model and the comsumer model 60u and 600u? Better quality? I know the pro model's doesn't have speakers and what not. So why would people buy it?
Behindthescenes I don't know how they do it, but it is done this form changed from I want to buy an inexpensive LCD to which is better. A little advice. Don't change your mind. From what you are saying you wanted an LCD when you started this thread. Don't let the LCD haters or DLP and Plasma lovers sway you. All models come with pros and cons. I don't need to tell you that because I am sure you did your homework before you came to this point(''ready to purchase'')If you were on firm ground to get an LCD, get your LCD because you will be even more upset if you get your second choice and it ends up being one of the defect models. Everyone here has heard the stories. I had an LCD problem and the store switched it with no problem, new TV no problms yet but some stores aren't as nice. The best piece of advice is you get what you pay for with cheap or expensive TVs, you can have a problem with any technology that is out today.
As somone said in this you responses, you can wait for the new technology, which might be much better then current technology. But if it doesn't kick in and get popular right away the prices for the older tech will stay the same. For someone that is looking to buy now, that doesn't think like the best idea. Because that is still a couple of years off. Well again I hope this helps in you search. By the way, my bad LCD 40 XBR1, good LCD XBR2. Again, this is not an pro LCD message or an anti-all others message. Just trying to answer the person original post.
