Good day,
I've been web browsing and found nothing on how to remove/delete the 1,000 plus IDX files on my PC.
To my understanding they provide Fast Access to the main file somewhat like Temp Internet Files folder or how Shortcut relates to the Programs.exe file.
Been said that IDX file extensions are harmless and may be deleted as all they do is waste Hard drive space.
I am trying to find an appropriate TOOL or program that will find and delete all these .IDX files.
Thanks you for any guidance relating to this subject.
Yes, I've already tried Searching through CNET Forum
on IDX files and came to conclusion that there was no solution provided to others.
once there, for every drive listed (in case you have partitions), click that drive, click Edit, Delete Indexing. That should stop the indexing of all files for 'faster access', and either will delete the idx files on its own after a reboot or you can then do a Search, *.idx and once all show up in the found files area, click Edit, Select All, and right click anything highlighted and choose Delete.
TONI
it is correcting problems that arise as a result of deleting the wrong ones that is difficult.
*.idx files are index files for various applications and/or utilities and while many are of no real import at all others can be. Most are used to index database files.
Consider that if you happen to use Outlook Express, it makes use of *.idx files for indexing the messages stored in its database message store -- get rid of the index and loose the message.
Now, if you still want to delete them follow the following instructions:
Click the Start button then Run
Type cmd /k then click OK or press the enter key
In the Command Prompt window that opened type cd \
That should get you to a prompt something like C:\>
Now type DEL /s *.idx (deletes all *.idx files including those in sub directories)
Now you can exit that command prompt.
All except those in use at the time will disappear (as in will have to be recovered using third party deleted file recovery apps because they bypass the "recycle bin".
I would suggest going here http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html and downloading Restoration 2.5.14 so it will be handy if problems such as programs not working correctly arise.
