DVR question

by thepoetrydude - 4/19/04 2:18 PM

Hello, is there a DVR(digital Video Recorder) in which I can use without a service like tivo? I want one that works like my vcr, just records digitally. I don't mind manually setting the timer, if it would allow me to do that.
Is there something like this out there?

Thanks.

I, too, would like to know the answer to this question. I am looking for the same thing, and I don't want to have DVD writing ability - only the hard drive needed.

Yes there are several DVRs available now. Panasonic makes a number of them. I own the Panasonic DMR-E30. It records DVD-R from cable, or from your VHS tapes and I find the quality extremely good. It's barely harder to use than a VCR: you set the timer exactly the same way. It knows if there is room on a disc for your program. There is no danger of "taping over" something, as with VHS. You can also record with DVD-RAM, which is re-recordable.

If you do want the hard-drive capability, there are models with that.

DVR with Manual timers

by dawoodcat - 8/1/06 7:14 AM In reply to: DVR question by thepoetrydude

My job is in the Satellite broadcasting of educational materials world of technology. We sell a receiver that works on the EPG (Electronic Program Guide) format for setting "on/off" timers. We do not carry/sell a DVR that has the capability to have the user/customer to set timers manually. We are looking for the same technology as the old VCR's. It has been very frustrating to find units that fit this bill. I chose to respond in this already started chat. Can we start a list of units that work and have a proven positive track record? I would like to start the list with.....

-JVC DR-MH305. 160GB/32 Manual Timers.
-Phillips DVDR3455H/37. 160GB/20 Manual Timers.

We could possibly add prices and vendors to the list. I not sure if we need to go there though.

Thanks,
Dan W.
