Windows Genuine Advantage Problems FIXED

by com2pc - 8/27/06 11:52 AM In reply to: 8/25/06 Help! Windows Genuine Advantage issue by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

To all You C Net Members and Others who have found yourself in The Genuine advantage crunch.. Im happy to report there is a VERY effective and Simple Cure for all of YOU. Just Simply DO NOT GO To The MICROSOFT Website for A N Y Updates for X P ( manually).... Instead set Your P C Operating system to AUTOMATICALLY Get UPDATES. This bypasses the Windows Genuine advantage tools.Your copy of X P will be updated completely, By the Automatic update process!!!NOTE.. IF You are having any problem with Microsoft saying Your copy of X P is NOT geuine. Then be SURE to set the automatic Updates, so That it tells You what it is going to download and Install. Choose The custom Install and REVIEW exactly WHAT You are about to download and Install. If It shows the GENUINE advantage tool. Uncheck The Box and tell It to Not show You this download again. IF You Ever take that tool, You will be Plagued with an annoying popup from Microsoft every time you boot The P C saying Yopur copy of X P is Not Genuine. So You Have to be sure You monitor Your updates and NOT take that Genuine advantage tool.. If You avoid the G .A. T. you can get any and all Other Updates for Both service pack 1 all the way down to Service pack 2 If You want it.

Mostly inaccurate...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 8/27/06 1:09 PM In reply to: Windows Genuine Advantage Problems FIXED by com2pc

1.) If you use Windows Update online you can run the Custom scan option, which allows you to pick and choose which updates to install. Thus, you can opt not to download the WGA updates.

2.) You do NOT receive all updates through Automatic Updates...you will only receive High-Priority updates. To download low-priority/optional updates you must go to Windows Update.

3.) Automatic Updates doe NOT bypass the Genuine Advantage Program. Even pirates are allowed to download high-priority updates, which is all Automatic Updates provides. (See #2)

4.) The WGA updates are listed as high-priority updates, meaning you will receive them through Automatic Updates just like you would through Windows Updates. However, you still have the option of ignoring the WGA updates.

5.) The WGA updates are only an issue if you are running a pirated/cracked copy of Windows or have an invalid/pirated product key.

Thus, in this case there is NO benefit to using Automatic Updates over Windows Updates.

the horse had bolted...

Thanks for the post. But MS used two methods to whack me. First, a daily download from my systems tray. Normally, MS just used to remind me to download SP2. I used click cancel.
But,one day, sleepily, I noticed they had added two new upgrades.
I knew nothing of WGA at the time. So,I thought 0K. Can't do any harm and clicked install.
ZAP!I was trapped. In MS went - boots and all, installing WGA reminders all over my laptop.
It was "sneaky";they gave me no option to look at what I was upgrading - and now an "invasion" of my quiet enjoyment of my laptop.
Shame on you Gates and MS.
Thanks, mate, for your advice. If only it had been earlier in my case.

WGA vs. the people!

by seraphazaziel79 - 8/28/06 6:30 AM In reply to: 8/25/06 Help! Windows Genuine Advantage issue by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I beleive that all together its a scam to purchase microsoft products or additional licensing. I have the same issue and I have 3 valid copies of xp. I can install the same copy on a different computer because one of them is already running it and since they claim there is so called no longer support for sp1 that all genuine users should already have sp2. totally not fair. I really dont think a company should force its consumers to purchase its products. Later on when vista makes its public appearance its gonna be really tough choosing from 6 different versions with one having less features than the next. Not worth it. I already run linux live dvd software booted on an additonal hd and i dont have any problems at all like this with open source software. But not to worry about the big sign on the screen that says your copy of "windows is not genuine". Microcrap is like the Roman empire.... pretty soon stocks will drop do to being disliked by fanbase of once loyal and legal customers. Im sure that another OS out there will prove to be more useful, more secure, and better looking..."aahhem...Linux"....and Microsux will never have to worry about its product being used ever again.

No longer supported only means u need to install SP2

by thewizardofahhs - 8/30/06 11:42 PM In reply to: WGA vs. the people! by seraphazaziel79

Simply download SP2, or go to the older windows update site and DOWNLOAD SP2.

you don't need WGA loaded to get SP2.

You can get it to validate...

by Panor - 8/28/06 10:16 AM In reply to: 8/25/06 Help! Windows Genuine Advantage issue by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Go to www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag

I have had PC's brand new out of the box preloaded with the OS not pass the validation. If you go to this site they can validate it another way. They usually pass from here.

Microsoft did not say all on its program WGA

Antipiratage: Microsoft did not say all on its program WGA Zdnet.fr
By Joris Evers
CNET News.com

Technology - users realized that the new WGA sends data to the editor with each starting, and not only at the time of the first validation. Microsoft speaks about maintenance action and admits not having communicated. The new version of the device antipiratage WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) of Microsoft, which allows authenticating the copy of Windows remotely installed on a PC, worries the defenders of the personal freedoms. Because once installed on a PC, WGA is not satisfied to validate or not the copy of OS: it contacts each day Microsoft with the starting of the PC, has just confirmed the American editor. On its blog, Lauren Weinstein, famous activist, assimilate WGA to a spyware. Does once the authentification of the copy carried out, why, wonder, the tool must it send data to each starting? And which are the really transmitted data? Microsoft, on its side, ensures that WGA transmits daily information to him only at ends of maintenance. "the program of notification WGA checks parameters of configuration on its servers to see whether WGA can function", by e-mail a representative of the editor answered him. "That makes it possible Microsoft to decontaminate it if necessary", in the event of dysfunction for example.

A lack of precision on behalf of Microsoft

No significant data is sent during the phase of comparison with Microsoft, which occurs after each starting of the computer, ensures it. However, Weinstein increases, the editor receives address IP of the user and the hour of connection. "does it act of a spyware? All depends admittedly on the definition of what is a spyware because there are several. On the other hand, one can wonder rightly if Microsoft sufficiently informed the public of this behavior." Microsoft admits not not having sufficiently communicated on this subject. But ensures that it is not a question of a software spy, since it does not settle without the knowledge of the user, and does not have a malevolent mission. The editor however plans to clarify the mission of WGA, while starting by modifying the text of the licence. This text provides the list of data which the program returns to Microsoft at the time of the very first authentification of OS: the key of product of Windows XP, the mark of the PC, the version of OS, information on the BIOS, as well as the selected parameters of language.

Key Generators

by topazg - 8/29/06 8:28 AM In reply to: 8/25/06 Help! Windows Genuine Advantage issue by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It is also worth bearing in mind that license key generators that generate keys for Windows XP do so looking for a valid (checked by algorithm) key for the operating system. Whilst incredibly unlikely due to the number of available combinations, it is possible that someone running on a pirated version of the software may have stumbled on your key by coincidence, thus locking out your own copy - if this is the case, there will be no way round it by reinstalling Windows, and you will have to go through Microsoft.

Best Regards,
- Graham

Limitations to CD Key change.

by thewizardofahhs - 8/30/06 11:48 PM In reply to: WGA PROBLEM by bigsnowrabbit

you can only change keys for like versions.

you can't change a retail to accept OEM or Volume License Keys for example.

You don't need jellybean to do it. The product activation windows (telephone activation) allows this as well.

So you can't turn that warze version of XP Pro Corporate into a retail XP Pro.

You can only make it functional with a valid Volume License Key).

DOES Windows have ANY advantage?

by sbarrmed - 9/1/06 7:50 AM In reply to: 8/25/06 Help! Windows Genuine Advantage issue by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

OK, I will admit, I am a recent convert from years of Windows XP to Mac OS X (really did not like the snooty, superior Mac attitude), but after years of viruses, crashes, freezes, and lost data, my business upgraded to OS X and I have to say, THIS is a real genuine advantage! OS X is as close to perfect as an operting system can be, and I feel liberated from a mediocre (at best) product that just seemed to be a series of fixes and patches.

I know most other businesses are so deep in Windows "technology", or have to buy everything "on the cheap", but if you can, escape the nightmare of Windows and move up to a Mac.

See? Now I have a snooty, superior attitude, but spend no time cursing our machines or calling tech support. Productivity is way up, and people actually like their Macs at work. To me , this a genuine advantage!
