Is there such thing as wireless dial-up?

by jadraper4859 - 8/27/06 10:29 AM

As you can see by my question I know little about wireless internet. I bought my granddaugther a HP Slimline pc about six monthes ago. It's running XP. My daughter now needs it to do an online Math class for College. There is no phone jack in the only room where the pc can go (only one working in whole house). Can I buy something that will allow her to have dial-up service and not have to hook directly up to a phone jack? Any suggestions would be helpful.

cost effective

it would be a lot more cost effective to just get a dual wall adaptor for the phone line and just run a 50 ft or whatever size wire may be needed phone line to the computer... instead of having to purchase the apple airport extreme and a wireless card for your computer. but if your daughter is using it for school i would highly recommend dsl thru your phone service. it would not tie up your phone and she would be able to get info and watch informational videos she would not have access to with just dial-up. and if you are thinking you can not afford that extra 30 bucks a month if you are from a low income family. with bush's no child left behind program most state governments do offer to pay for highspeed internet service for homes with children that are in school. you would just have to sign up for it.

No Child Left Behind

Obviously the previous poster didn't read the part about online COLLEGE math course. No Child Left Behind does not pertain to college/university classes, only grades K-12. However, if your daughter derives any money from the state, or grants, or scholarships, it can be used to defray the cost of high speed internet access, assuming you are willing to do the paperwork/documentation/accounting that applies to the applicable guidelines. To be honest, the amount of work involved in relation to the savings, is typically not justified, in my opinion.
