What kind of headphones do you use?

by jameskim CNET staff - 8/2/06 4:35 PM

Taking a poll....

I am reviewing the Shure E500PTH (awesome, but expensive); I own the Grado SR80 (great sound, kind of uncomfortable to wear); I also own standard Sony over the ears (comfortable and solid); and I often use the Creative Zen Aurvanas (solid, simple).

I'm not a big fan of wireless headphones, yet.

I like the in-ear style. They keep breaking on me though. I go through a pair every month or two. I'm pretty hard on them so it's not really a big surprise. I stuff em in my pocket, throw them around, whatever. That's the main reason I havent gone for any of the higher end headphones. I dont feel too bad when I wreck a pair of the Sony's. Btw, the Apple in-ear headphones are teh suxors.

Sony headphones here

by qoman55 - 8/25/06 10:54 AM In reply to: What kind of headphones do you use? by jameskim CNET staff

Since I'm an old guy with hearing aids, I use over the head Sony MDR-NC6 Noise-Canceling Headphones. I can't use in the ear headphones obviously. I've tried several different ones and find the Sony's comfortable to wear, sound good to me, and work well with my hearing aids. I've had the Sony's for the past year and a half used with two different MP3 players, a Zen Micro and my current SanDisk Sansa E270.

The Plug : Escape Other People's Musical Misjudgements

by jazzkween - 12/12/06 6:41 AM In reply to: (NT) I use "Koss: The Plug" headphones, very comfortable! by dreamappetiser

I endured several years at a NYC gym with THEIR choice of music booming while I tried haplessly to turn mine up on my walkman (yes, this covered quite a few years)as I waited for these to be "invented." This is exactly what anyone in a noisy or distracting environment wants: simple ear plugs plugs that block outside sound but happen to be little speakers as well for private listening. I've worked my way thru several pairs over a number of years but they are inexpensive and discreet. I had tried everything to compete with the mind numbing dance beat coming thru ceiling speakers, including huge home-type headphones that cover the ears, but even that absurd fashion statement (looking like some sort of ridiculous obsessed stereophile in the process) can't compare to these. In a quiet environment I use ones that don't "seal" my ears like these, but for blocking out people and noise, these are far and away the best. They saved my workout, saved time by blocking out workout socializers & thereby also prevented the moral turpitude & shame spirals of casual gay gym hookups. Speaking of safety, a serious caution: don't play these while walking in traffic or driving, as you won't hear things that could endanger your safety.

Sony MDR-EX71 w/ trouble down the road

by Stonecutter#909 - 8/26/06 4:42 PM In reply to: What kind of headphones do you use? by jameskim CNET staff

I bought the Sony MDR-EX71 when I got the 4G iPod about 1.5 years ago. They sound really good for earbuds and the price, but they have a problem. About 2 months ago the wire casing right below where the wires connect to the buds have, the best way to describe it is dissentigrating, exposing the wires. I've used them a lot including during workouts. I suspect my sweat might have something to do with it. Has anyone else had this happen to them or heard of it happening? And does anyone know the best way to fix it without having to resort to tacky-looking electrical tape?

Common Problems - see Amazon reviews

by valid8r - 8/31/06 7:01 AM In reply to: Sony MDR-EX71 w/ trouble down the road by Stonecutter#909

This is a common problem, though one I have yet to encounter with my Sony plugs. This is well covered in the Amazon reviews, which by the way is an excellent resource to get a wide range of views on all of these products. I purchased mine, even though I was aware of this problem ( which they say is worse with the white plugs and less so with the black). If you are a high user (24/7) then it is more likely to occur. I am an occassional user and typically for not much more than an hour or so (except long flights).

Good luck!
