Since we're at it

by nickcom - 8/25/06 10:13 AM In reply to: WGA is TWO SEPARATE Applications by Flatworm

Well, I totally agree with flatworm's statement. This is what happened to me. I installed like a good boy the silly WGA and then due to some problems I restored my computer to the state where WGA wasn't. Anyway I got the stupid message: please install or you won't be able to download any new updates. I ignored it and I've seen in task manager that the windows XP update program does his job just fine. I've always chosen custom and decided what I wanted even though my update setting is on automatical. So my computer downloads whatever MS wants BUT when it comes to installing I can still call the shots. So for me this silly WGA thing is just a reduction of my freedom as a computer user. And for the record the problems with my computer started when I downloaded and installed the newly Internet Explorer 7.0 and that caused nausea, slowness in movement and a lot more impairement issues for my poor computer.
I salute however the fact that finally even MS had to open more to public and their monopoly on software is shrinking fast. For instance I installed Open office and is a whole lot better than any MS Office suite.

That being said I wish you have a nice day.

Anytime I see the word ''Beta'' I see NO! Don't tuch!
Why? Because it's not ryeady for market YET.

If you're not ( and i'm not )a Developer or Software Engineer, Beta is not for us.

Internet Explorer 7.0, and VISTA are both still in it.

Speeking of ''VISTA'' / if it comes out in 2007... I will not buy until 2009... MaYbE???

Open Office...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 8/25/06 9:13 PM In reply to: I E 7.0 \\\ Beta = RED Flag !?! by SamLowry74

OpenOffice is an open-source project, a free spinoff of StarOffice, offered through Sun Microsystems. It's a pretty good alternative to Microsoft Office with near-seamless compatibility when it comes to documents and formats. It's currently in version 2.0 and available for download from openoffice.org.

John

P.S. Internet Explorer 7.0 is now in RC1 (release candidate 1...a near-finished product) and should go RTM (final release) within the next month or two.

Gearing up for VISTA

by Foggy - 8/25/06 9:46 AM In reply to: No offense... by tnfeden

To the millions of legit XP users who haven't got a clue what their registry is or frankly have never opened their computer box to see what a motherboard or a hard drive looks like, are then told by MS, "Oh by the way, your copy of XP is pirated, you are guilty until proven innocent!". Don't you think Bill Gates and his band of theives should give the owners of a copy of XP the benefit of the doubt that they in fact own a legit copy, by first telling them that they might not have a legit copy, but give them all of the phone and online support they need to prove they are in fact legit? My personal experience with the MS Support was horrid, they were rude, mostly didn't know their behinds from holes in the ground and thought they were gifts from God. How many people do you think not wanting to get in trouble went out and needlessly bought another copy of XP? Hundreds if not thousands at the full MS price.

I'm not a Techie, but maybe I should be, God knows by now I know more than most of them having owned a computer since 1989 and have had to do all my upgrades myself including working in my registry. It's not all that hard to navigate your registry with a little common sense. Are there Pirated copies of XP out there? Sure there are, but it isn't as bad as it was back in the old days of the 1990s when computers cost 3 to 4 times what they do today(my 1989 computer cost $2600, no bundled software, 1 mg of RAM and a 65 mg hard drive). MS wants $300 for a copy of XP when you can buy a computer now for $400, so what is XP's real value about $25.

MS is gearing up to their newest SCAM Vista. By it's delay you know it is chock full of bugs and is ripe for viruses and many will be forced to buy it as all support on XP will be dropped. If MS had real competition it would have been forced into bankruptcy by now.

Pirating problem ... Product Activation Just Reduced It

by pmchefalo - 8/25/06 1:53 PM In reply to: Gearing up for VISTA by Foggy

WGA is Microsoft's reaction to the fact that their Product Activation feature was hacked. If Product Activation was perfect, it would never have been an issue. But as usual the criminals among us make things hard for honest folks to make a living. When I build systems I use legal software. The breaks I get are not as good as the high volume producers, but I have local low-volume competition who uses cracked Windows and Office software, and they undercut me on price, even though I cut my return to the bone. I want Microsoft to catch these guys, no matter what it takes.

Who cares what Microsoft says

by wizardb - 8/25/06 4:00 PM In reply to: No offense... by tnfeden

Given the record Microsoft has I opted for Hacking the dll then eradicating all traces of wga from the registry on all machines that I have seen with the wga bug, this software is just another attempt by Microsoft to us my processor cycles and bandwidth for their purposes, noway

cant buy a mac have been recalled on laptops as they are going BANG

Post 72 of 238

What are you going on about??

by twyrick - 8/25/06 7:24 AM In reply to: macintosh by fastpaw

There is a battery recall for *older* Mac laptops... not any of the current Macbook or Macbook Pro models. And there's not a single documented case of one going "bang" on somebody (unlike Dell). It's simply an issue where both Dell and Apple bought batteries of a similar type from Sony, and now it's come to light that Sony screwed up.

Not quite correct

by ACT-Colorado - 8/25/06 7:41 AM In reply to: What are you going on about?? by twyrick

Some batteries for the early 15" Macbook Pro have also been recalled. The affected batteries have a model number of A1175 and a 12 digit serial number that ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC.

You are correct though in that none have exploded, just a few warping issues to my knowledge. Some that prevent the battery from recharging do to surfaces not making clean contact.

No MacBook Pro 17" batteries have been recalled to my knowledge.

It's not Apple or Dell problem...

by GadgetGirlie - 8/25/06 10:16 AM In reply to: macintosh by fastpaw

the baterries in question, where not manufactured by apple or dell, they where manufatured by SONY...

So the problem is a sony problem...

Some conspiracy gurus are saying that since no VAIO's where afected by the recall that Sony in bad faith sold defective bateries to the rivals.

Post 75 of 238

well maybe not but regardless DELL SUCKS!!

by jayw654 - 9/2/06 12:56 AM In reply to: It's not Apple or Dell problem... by GadgetGirlie

okay the batterie issue i can't really say much about, however i must say that dell is trash, they use the cheapest components they can find and dumb people buy into there commercials thinking that dell is the thing, it's not i've replaced more mainboards out of dell than i can count and the power supplies they use are garbage, don't believe go online and look at the 85,000 computer recalls because there power supplies "blow-up" lol i think it's funny. i'm saying that it isn't okay to save a buck, but when it drasticly effects the quality of the unit you gotta sit and wonder why your buying there "TRASH". I can put a rock solid custom built machine online and i won't get a dime, but if i put a crappy dell online everyone jumps on it, i think it's funny how STUPID people are that they think they are getting a good machine with DELL. they see there are all these great features and not realizing these features were out a long time ago and all dell did was tag a different interface or gui to it and called it there own. they are NOT originators of a damn thing they just copy ideas from someone else that did it better and call it there own. Go ahead and keep being lied to. i'll stick to my "crappy" custom build for another 10 years and know it's going to work stabily that long while power supplies blow up in your face that are in your dell machine. Not to mention mainbaords dying or acting crazy and the oem Harddrives that they use in them. and last but not least the loss of performance compared to a custom board verus the oem board that's in the DELL. I have a friend that works for Cummins, they just got rid of there old stable IBM brand computers, these stock machines were not game machines by any means but they were stable for there office use, then they replaced all there machines with DELL, after that they had all kinds of network issues, hardrives crashing, loss of data and slow performance for what they were marked at. well there stuck under contract with DELL and can't do a damn thing about, but there not going back and they miss there old IBM branded machines. Well i said my piece i know it's off topic but i can't help it. now the wga problem well it's like this, if your smart enough you can swindle a legit key from microsoft, I DID!!
