Notebooks

I currently own a Sony s-460 notebook. Its small (yet big enough to still see), light weight, and the battery seems o last abut 4 hours. But now it has a cracked screen. It was under warranty but Sony just ignored the fact it was. They proceeded to tell me that it was my fault. But I don't understand why anyone would break a $2500 computer.

**Overall I enjoyed my computer but am now looking for a Toshiba. The s-460 was a nice computer never any problems except for the screen and costomer service.

Gotta be screen size.

I'd look for a minimum 15.4" widescreen with 17" favorable. Bigger the better!

First thing I look at is the keyboard...

...because some of them don't make any sense. When I bought my V2000z, the keyboard was what first attracted me. Most of the laptops at the store were so small, with these tiny little keys. The V2000z has full size keys AND the key placement is standard. The size is balanced by a smaller touchpad and a widescreen display.

My mom gave me her "old" Dell Inspiron 5100 when she got a new laptop. I'm using it right now. The keyboard layout is atrocious. The Windows key and the context menu key (do I even need one of those?) are on the top row with the function keys. The delete and insert keys are on the bottom row to the left of the arrow keys. BUT it has nice sized keys and a fairly big screen, so I love it anyway. (Being free certainly didn't hurt either.)

Now, fan placement... they're fine for use on your lap once you learn to sit a certain way. Some might say that it shouldn't have to be that way, but I don't mind. I bought my first laptop in 1997. (A solid, dependable Thinkpad.) Even after all this time, I'm still fascinated and delighted by the concept of a complete computer that I can hold on my lap. When affordable wireless came along... heaven.

the battery life

by yunnanbaby - 8/23/06 9:16 AM In reply to: What do you consider the most important feature in a laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

my sis got a dell as a surprise present which was really a surprise because the battery life sucked!!! it was only able to stay barely an hour without passing out on us. and we weren't doing anything strenous on it. It would be on without anybody using it!!!!!!! so battery life makes a lot of sense. Because what is the sense of it being so light and portable and beautiful if it cannot be really used as a portable device!!!!!
