OBNOXIOUS RING TONES, LOUD CONVERSATIONS, & DRIVING

by mandrewwhiteman - 8/15/06 8:16 PM In reply to: What gets under your skin about public cell phone usage? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I cannot tolerate noice so obnoxious, loud music as ring used as tones distract and disturb me as much as plain obnoxious, loud music. People should have the courtesy not to disturb the peace and respect other people's right to quiet.

Cell phones may be necessary to transact business or personal communications, but it is rude and obnoxious to yell on the cell phone so that it is gear at a distance. A normal voice would be appropriate.

Talking on cell phones while driving is a safety hazard because one's attention is not on driving! I was talking with a Realtor on a cell while she was driving when she commented, "That idiot almost hit me!" I was wondering who actually almost hit whom? I sure had my opinion.

This should be punished by a flogging...

by davecombs - 8/15/06 8:17 PM In reply to: What gets under your skin about public cell phone usage? by Marc Bennett Moderator

People using the cell phone IN THE BATHROOM. There is a guy at work who has actually carried on a conversation while seated on the throne.

He needs to be caned.

NO ''THRONE CALLS'' PLEASE!

by Azure Valhalla - 8/15/06 11:41 PM In reply to: This should be punished by a flogging... by davecombs

I completely agree! There should be some magical ''interference field'' that can be installed not only in public restrooms, but many other public places as well. Everywhere you go there are signs posted: ''This is a professional office (or whatever). Please turn off all cell phones and electronic devices.'' Still, I continue to be annoyed by those who feel they are ''too important'' to follow the rules.

Maybe establishments should require phones to be checked at the door, like a coat. Don't like it? Too bad, the rest of us welcome the break from your high-volume blabbering about NOTHING! Take your business elsewhere, as the owner would probably prefer to keep all the decent customers and ditch one annoying loser.

Personally, I'm adopting a new public restroom technique: start making groaning or vomiting noises louder than the idiot in the next stall. Don't stop until THEY do. If you meet at the sink, just say you have a common allergy to RUDENESS!

A P.S. to this? I worked for over three years in the Financial Department at a large cell phone company. Had a cell as a ''perk'', rarely used it, don't miss it. Remember when people used to go ''out to lunch'' and actually talk to EACH OTHER? I'm all for LAWS being placed on the use of these annoyances.

Drivers distracted by phone conversation

by Longbow5 - 8/15/06 8:26 PM In reply to: What gets under your skin about public cell phone usage? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Accidents and near misses occur daily; the typical driver is incapable of this multitasking without jeopardizing other drivers and pedestrians.

cell phone idiots

by gabrolena - 8/15/06 8:42 PM In reply to: Drivers distracted by phone conversation by Longbow5

The other thing that bothers me, is people who think it is nescessary to talk on the phone in a restaurant. I'm sorry, but I prefer to eat in peace, not listen to someone on their cell phone. They are usually so loud you can't even carry on a conversation with the people you are with. I also agree about the idiots who think they can drive and talk.

resturant conversations

by starrpoint - 8/15/06 8:58 PM In reply to: cell phone idiots by gabrolena

This drives my husband crazy.

We both live busy lives, so at times will have breakfast together before parting for the day. I don't know how many times our breakfast was interupted by a very load conversation next to us.

we can hear ourselves think, much less carry on a conversation.

To all cell phone users--I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT.

Talking on the phone while checking out . . .

by justjan.s - 8/15/06 8:43 PM In reply to: Drivers distracted by phone conversation by Longbow5

We complain if the sales person is rude or disrespectful, but what are we if we are talking on the phone while making a purchase? The respect should go both ways!

Cell phones use in cars

by walsh84 - 8/16/06 12:43 PM In reply to: Drivers distracted by phone conversation by Longbow5

Another of the fad problems that have led to trying to find a blame point for everything and prevent ANYTHING bad from happening so all can live forever (that would fix Social Security!). Except for DIALING while driving, the use of a cell phone is FAR less dangerous than dealing with a child in the back seat in their protector. This requires turning the head and looking backwards, and if that doesn't present a danger you haven't seen it. How about 2 or more passengers holding a conversation and looking at each other--is that less dangerous than staring out the front window and talking on a phone that can be dropped in an emergency???

People talking too loud

by lbeberdick - 8/15/06 8:42 PM In reply to: What gets under your skin about public cell phone usage? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The main irritation with public cell phone useage is people shouting because their blue tooth headsets have a microphone next to their earlobe. and they have to shout in order for the person on the other end of the cell phone conversation to be heard.

Cell Phone Gripe

by 1965healy - 8/15/06 8:44 PM In reply to: What gets under your skin about public cell phone usage? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I HATE WALKIE TALKIE PHONES!!! Its bad enough having to put up with everyone's idea of a GREAT ringtone w/o having to listen to their conversations as well. Whoever came up with this particular innovation needs to be tied to a chair and forced to listen to the results of their brainstorm like the rest of us poor slobs. THIS IS AS RUDE AND OBNOXIOUS AS BOOM BOXES, SCREAMING CHILDREN AND INCESSANTLY BARKING DOGS.

Univited guest.

by starrpoint - 8/15/06 8:53 PM In reply to: What gets under your skin about public cell phone usage? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I hate the culture of cell phones, the tyrany of them. The way they are consuming our society.

I hate having my conversation interupted by the demands of the cell phone.

Business meetings are interupted by the kids calling from school, a peaceful walk is ruined by joggers/walkers talking to the air, and we are all indangered by the driver distracted by the cell phone.

But what really makes me mad is when the person I am talking to or doing something with is constantly answering the demanding cell phone.

I have had people come over for dinner, and constantly answer their phone.

Instead of excusing themselves, they sit in MY HOUSE on my furniture, drinking my coffee, and talking to someone else!

The relaxing evening I had tried to set up is ruined by this univited guest, and the people are oblivious.

I have had this happen at others homes too, I am invited over, and a sister or such will call, (a person they talk to several times a day) and they are off and running with that conversation, and there I sit, a guest in their home.

This is crazy.

The ignored guest

by Jay M - 8/16/06 6:33 AM In reply to: Univited guest. by starrpoint

The very same thing has happened to me numerous times. I have had arguments with a friend about how he ignores me, sitting in his living room while he chats with somebody who just called.
Nobody seems ever to say "I can't talk now. I'll call you back". The phone reigns supreme.

There is no more consideration of others. It's all about 'me' more than ever now.
The world has become a GIGANTIC PHONE BOOTH and to some of us this is a living nightmare. I live in a large city and cannot take a bus anymore because of the cacaphonous shouting on the phones. No public space--parks, esplanades--are immune to the loud, rude chatter of these people. It's horrible.
Nothing can be done, the battle (if there ever really was one) is lost, dead and buried.

Yes, common curtsey is LONG dead

by c.Lake - 8/16/06 6:22 PM In reply to: The ignored guest by Jay M

Both of you are absolutely right. It’s unbelievable what people will do with (and without) cellphones on the bus – while we’re all trapped going from A to B. As an avid cellphone user… I try my best to NOT be a complete butt-hole while using it. I like to read the news, and surf the web then anything else. When I have a phone call, I try to remove myself to talk privately, and softly. But there are times when family will, without fail, dump some ridiculous family bullsh_t on you at the WORST possible moment – and nobody can help being loud during those times.

However, I wish OTHER PEOPLE would TRY to have more consideration of others in public places. I mean… who are you showing off for? Now, at a party or at someone’s house? That’s just inexcusable! They are there to see YOU. I turn my phone OFF, it DOES have an OFF button – why can’t people remember that?

refused to be ignored

by IronManCurtis - 8/18/06 4:22 PM In reply to: The ignored guest by Jay M

Ignored while present while your host chats with a caller? Sure it's rude (unless it's an IMPORTANT call, i.e. from or regarding work, etc.) My solution is to be rude right back. I'll give 'em five minutes, then tell them, "I have better things to do than to be ignored while you give MY time to someone who's not even here. Call me when you have time for me. JUST me. With your cellphone OFF." Then I walk out.

Or I head for the head and call them on MY cellphone ;)

If they get annoyed, well, that's my point.

BTW cellphones have lead to an entirely new (and I believe illegal) abuse. Employers calling employees at all hours of the day and night, usually for silly stuff they're just too lazy or disorganized to look up for themselves. Answering a phone call is work, and should put you on the clock. I understand an OCCASIONAL emergency call (or if you're "on call" and being PAID extra), but when it's happening regularly (like monthly, weekly, etc.), it's abusive and a violation of our right to a private life.
