Cell phone usage

I object to cell phones for all of the given reasons.

All of the above

by JannieB - 8/16/06 6:18 AM In reply to: Cell phone usage by TheAnt317

I answered the poll as other to indicate all of the above as that wasn't a choice listed.

I love my cell phone, but I try to be respectful when I use it in public. My husband and I went to dinner about a month ago - the woman of the couple seated behind me took a call on her cell and spent at least 20 minutes away from the table talking on her phone. I hope it wasn't a first date!

I live in NYS where talking and driving are illegal without a headset - as if that makes any difference! I see lots of illegal talking and no ticket writing. If you have to take a call, pull over or use your headset like I do. Stop putting everyone else's safety at risk and follow the law!

We have a guy who drops off our payroll every Friday around 8 am, and every week he has headset on, cell phone in hand, chattering away. I always wonder how he finds so many people to talk to that early in the morning! How rude!

I have several friends that only have cell phones, no home phones. The portability is great. I would do the same if not for needing the internet connection - sorry overpriced cable is out of the question.

Cell phones are a "necessity" in today's world, but we all need to remember courtesy when using them in public!

ALL of the above!!

I think that about sums it all up pretty well. Any time it should be quiet, you could disturb others, you are out with people, etc - you should at least set the thing to vibrate only and be courteous. I turn mine off most of the time. A little respect goes a long way.

Turn the darn things off!!!

by rayliddle - 8/16/06 7:41 AM In reply to: What gets under your skin about public cell phone usage? by Marc Bennett Moderator

By far, the number one irritant of cell phone usage to me is the inconsiderate people who leave their phones on during religious services, concerts and other such public meetings. Most people, I'm sure, just forget that it is turned on. I wonder if it would be possible to create a device which would make any and all cell phones and pagers ring, either when they enter a building, or a concert hall or sanctuary, just to remind folks that, yes indeedy, their cell phone is still turned on!

Talking to Loud!

customer service

Oooh! Now this is a topic that really gets under my skin.

I work at a community college supervising academic labs and cell phones are a plague. Most students know that if they want to talk they must take it out to the hallway. The problem is those annoying loud rings. I encountered a student/students yesterday with one of those chirpy ringers. Every time I tried zeroing in on the culprit it would stop chirping. I couldn't get a straight answer as to whom the phone belonged to. I ended up throwing them all out of the lab. Equal opportunity!

I have a solution to the bathroom phones. My rule is to flush three times. It doesn't change the phone usage but it sure makes me feel better.

Here at school we have had to institute cell phone use for our students and faculty. I wish it weren't illegal to interrupt their service.

Last week I encountered the ultimate in rudeness. A new gas station opened up on my route to work. The gas prices are low so I decided it would be my new station of choice. I even shared the news of this new place and encouraged others to go there. I occasionally stop for the odd soda, milk, etc. and went inside last week. The clerk never once got off his phone to greet me or thank me for my purchase. At first I felt like a fool because I was chatting away and not understanding his response. He wasn't talking to me. I went back a couple of days later and the same thing happened. I left the item on the counter, excused myself for interrupting his conversation and left. I doubt he will get a clue though. The worst part is that I think he is the owner.

Public Cell Phone usage in general...

by Jonnydangers - 8/16/06 8:21 AM In reply to: What gets under your skin about public cell phone usage? by Marc Bennett Moderator

...is annoying to me unless it's and absolute necessity.
My cell phone is my home phone. Remember back in the days when our home phones hung on the wall AT HOME?
Well, I get complaints because I don't always answer my phone when people call. I just remind them that when I didn't have a cell phone I didn't answer my home phone when I wasn't home - so, get used to the same treatment. I will listen to the vme at my earliest convenience and call whoever it is back when I'm good and ready.

Restaurants.

by tjm626 - 8/16/06 8:47 AM In reply to: What gets under your skin about public cell phone usage? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The worst thing about these phones are the inconsiderate ones that can't turn them off in restaurants. You're trying to enjoy a nice dinner only to hear a loud ring, or obnoxious ring tone. Turn it off and fold it up. If you are expecting a call that important, eat at home.
