Some of both

by Jeffrey Rizor - 8/2/06 10:57 AM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

We use McAfee at work and have had no virus problems for years. Use SpyBot for spyware.

My neice's computer was loaded with viruses and spyware and I downloaded every free app I could to try to remove it all. Nothing did. In the end, I found NOD32 (free 30 day trial) and it fixed everything. I ended up paying for it as it was well worth it.

Agree

NOD32 is i think the best virus program, and all you do do get around the paid one, is install the trial version every month. My Uncle who works for the state of CA, uses NOD32 on the state computer. so in that case, NOD32 bust be good

No they don't

by Juan54805 - 8/2/06 11:53 AM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

After many years of PC use and paying the outlandish fees and prices asked by "paid version" security applications; I have gone completely to free use! When I switched from one "paid version" to Avast, even after doing updates bi-weekly, Avast found 8 viruses and trojans on my system! The anti-spyware and such too showed me the same results.

So in my opinion FREE is the way to go.

How would you know?

by barkeypf - 8/2/06 1:00 PM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I am using Zone Alarm Security Suite. Since the install my computer has given me less trouble than I have had for a while & it seems faster. My previous protection came strictly from Earthlink. My thought was that if there were any problems I could look only to earthlink to solve my problems.(no blame game to be played)This path worked better than Mc Affees suite and Norton Suite. Both gave me fits with how slow the computer became & always needed a talk with there support teams every time I had to update(always had a negitive responce @ each update).

Free versus paid software

by cityg2 - 8/2/06 3:08 PM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Free can be very good, but if anything goes wrong, it's "tough luck" whereas bought software has to perform as promised or companys liable to prosecution under trade practices act speaking from Australia that is.
The fear of prosecution usually means that the software has been tested better.

Paid vs, Free security versions

by kathiedoto - 8/2/06 3:29 PM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I currently have Norton's Antivirus (paid), Spyware Doctor (paid), Ad-Aware (free), AVG (free) and Spybot Search and Destroy v.4 (free) on my system.

Norton hogs the system, is abysmally slow, and positively refuses to check my email. I am going to ditch it when my current licence runs out.

Ad-Aware often picks up instances of malware and I wouldn't be without it.

AVG does an excellent job scanning incoming and outgoing emails, but is less thorough, and appears to be slower than Ad-Aware at system scans. Nevertheless, they are a good team.

Spybot often returns a clean bill of health when the other programs pick up some serious problems. This program seems to have deteriorated over the years. Nevertheless, I keep it uptodate and run it irregularly.

Spyware Doctor is, without a shadow of a doubt in my view, the best of these programs, and its cost is very reasonable, which tips the balance, for me, in favour of good, modestly-priced programs.

free security

by Jean Hood - 8/2/06 5:22 PM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

i think that if everyone shared the information on free security and found it to be outstanding could share it with other people on web sight. I don't think that a version of security that one pays for is any better, since i was foolish to buy what later found what was free was better I use the free version of ad-aware se and Avg Free, and find them to be better than a lot of others i paid for

It's so easy, free versions are the best :)

by BWTI - 8/2/06 5:23 PM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

cause... no one buy a paid version
i mean, the free versions are the best because it's so easy

PAID VERSION = BUY
FREE VERSION = DONATE

Paid = Specific $
Donate = any $ (0c, 10c, 5$, 10000$, etc...)

another example:
see: "WOW, A NEW ANTIVIRUS, IT WAS USSEFULL?"
*buy it* ... *let's try it now* ... "oh no, my computer suck :(* [need 512 ram and u have 256], what should i do with this crap? sell in e-bay?

nope, let's free...:
oh, i found a nice and free antivirus :)
i don't need pay at leats 300$ for it :)
i should donate :)

Paid versions - ya get what ya paid for!

by VPatrickA - 8/2/06 7:11 PM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Sure - they're are diamonds in the rough, but the more useful, the more it's gonna cost - Supply/Damand! that's basic economics!

Yea, paid versions provide more protection

by jtruman8511 - 8/2/06 8:02 PM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Sure they do, but it's usually (not always) because of the additional features they provide. I mean the vendors have to make some money somehow and I have no problem with that.

For example, Zone Alarm has additional levels of support you can purchas that include cache cleaning, anti-spyware, and even antivirus.

Fee vs. Free Anti-(whatever) Software.

by dgbvan - 8/3/06 1:22 AM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Does fee anti-(whatever) software offer offer better protection than the free version? H-m-m-m! Frankly, I don't know. I haven't tried both; I've used only one or the other.
How-some-ever... if you read 'exactly' what you are getting in the free version, I expect that the free version is identical to the paid version.
Now, the paid version may have extra features, but that is a different matter.
Why would this be so? The software vendor (provider) will be trying to persuade you to use the paid version, hence they will make the free version as good as possible.
Whoa! Maybe that's a reason to use the free rather than the paid software!!!

Use both

by WilliamJBrant - 8/3/06 9:06 AM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Every program has its own flavor and sometimes it is really a personal preference.
I use Bitdefender 9 as it is cheap for what it gives IMHO. It contains Antivirus, advanced Firewall, anti -spam -phishing and -spyware modules, combined.
You get constant updates during TWO years (sometimes several on one day) and the license is for TWO PC's and that for 64,90 €.....
I have still a license for Spy Sweeper too and I also use Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, now and then, to control(they don't find much!).
I have also used Panda software in the past with satisfaction (highly finished interface but not better and more expensive).
And, to finish: my daughter used Norton and came in big troubles. I succeeded in restarting the PC, installed AVG and saved her data. She is still using that program ...
Why pay than? If you look at reviews for the software concerned there are almost every time some points in favor of the ''fee'' programs.

weekly poll forum.

by patlinn - 8/3/06 12:22 PM In reply to: Do paid versions of security apps provide more protection? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I use the free version and not the paid version.I am thus unable to comment on the paid version. My experience is that the free version does what it says and works well.I am grateful to suppliers of a free version from a financial point of view and do support such suppliers when I make a purchase.
