Gigabeat S users, gotten close to 12 hrs battery?

by atamagaeatai - 7/12/06 6:26 AM

Have any Gigabeat S users gotten close to 12 hrs music listening on a charge? 9 hrs even?

I love the device, but this is my last hour of the work day tends to be musicless due to battery. And I don't listen straight through either. I'd estimate I get about 5-6 hrs of listening. I use the menus now and again, but usually not video.

Yes

I've gotten 12 hours (give or take 15 minutes) of music played over several days. I've also gotten a combo of 4+ hours video and 1 hour music.

what's the secret?

First off, do you have the S30 or S60? I have S30 and I wonder if there is a battery difference between the two. S60 is a bit thicker but i thought it was just to accomodate bigger drive.

I sure hope it's not just MY battery.

Very disappointed with S30 Battery Life

by benfrenchnyc - 7/16/06 11:35 AM In reply to: what's the secret? by atamagaeatai

After scouring the planet for a viable alternative to the IPOD, and reading all the reviews on CNET, engadget.com, etc., i was pretty stoked on getting the S30. I paid $90 bucks extra to have it shipped from the US as we don't have it in Canada yet.

And i was prepared for a little less battery life than some of the competition after reading all the supposed in-depth analysis. But nothing could have prepared me for how poor the device has performed. I'll be calling Toshiba tomorrow.

Mine lasts for a few hours of continuous play. And if don't use it for a couple days, the thing will drain completely, no matter how much i've used it. I've never owned an electronic device with worse battery life.

I'd really like to know if this is just a lemon or all the S30s are like this and people just gloss over the fact because it looks cool and has the whole MC feel.

oh one more thing

while i'm ranting, i must also mention i'm a bit choked with the fact that at the bottom of the display, there's a gap where the backlight shines through, this can get quite annoying when watching a video (it's on the right when turned to watch).

I don't know if i'll be returning but...

I really like the device with some minor gripes (read my first post about the TGS). Yes, the backlight LEDS on the side are a bit annoying; they give a ripply look to that end of the display, but I don't mind it that much.

I've just started wondering if it's my headphone selection that's the problem. I'm using some older audiophase headphones, probably 64 ohms or more input impedance, so I have to crank up volume to make it listenable. I wonder if I used earbuds (usually 32 ohms impedance or less) if it would significantly increase usage time on one charge. But I wonder, how much of the device power is actually spent driving the headphones versus the power spent for all other device functions (spinning the hard drive, lighting the LCD, etc)? Should this make a difference? So what kind of headphones are you using?

headphones

an interesting thought... i use sennheiser noise cancelling headphones, and in my car i hook into the cassette deck... could help continuous play, but any thoughts as to why it drains quicker than anything i've seen when it's not in use?? is it like a laptop in standby mode with this Windows Mobile MC thing?

S30 battery drainage

by urr_quasdim - 8/12/06 11:38 AM In reply to: Very disappointed with S30 Battery Life by benfrenchnyc

Nope, it's not just your unit. Mine drains completely within a few days WITH THE POWER OFF! I sent an e-mail to Toshiba asking if there is a firmware upgrade to solve this problem. Otherwise it's back to the iPod...

Turn off harmonics

by dbajpai - 7/16/06 10:47 PM In reply to: Gigabeat S users, gotten close to 12 hrs battery? by atamagaeatai

I've had pretty decent battery life. If you have harmonics turned on, it will eat a large chunk of your battery life. I think eq and subscription music tracks eat up battery life too.

maybe

by benfrenchnyc - 7/17/06 10:28 PM In reply to: Turn off harmonics by dbajpai

i'll try that, thanks for the suggestion... but still any thoughts as to why this thing drains so quickly??

I don't know

by dbajpai - 7/17/06 11:16 PM In reply to: maybe by benfrenchnyc

I did read somewhere that the harmonics can cut battery life by 30-40%, but I don't remember where I read that. I haven't tried comparing them. I do appreciate the fact that I can charge the gigabeat in so many ways, since it has the standard mini USB that my RAZR has and the standard 5v AC charger that my PSP and PDA have.
