iPod

Isn't one of Apple's selling points 'It just works'?

Sadly, Apple hardware isn't what people seem to think.
I used a Mac at school recently for a film project and that thing crashed on me 3 times within the first hour of use. It's a PowerMac G5 with OSX Tiger too. So much for it being better than Windows. XP never crashed on me that much.

Windows ME however...

4th Generation iPod died within 6 months

by Sumo Joel - 8/12/06 8:54 AM In reply to: IPODs Fail After Just Over 1 Year? by davidefulton

I purchased a 4th Generation iPod in November 2004, and it started malfunctioning within 5 months. Luckily, I was able to submit my warranty claim online to Apple within the first six months.

Apple offers a 6 month unlimited warranty (they pay for shipping), and limited warranty (you pay for shipping) within the first 7-12 months.

I was disappointed, but I will note that:

1. Apple offered an effortless warranty repair claim process through their website.

2. The shipping box arrived within 2 days, which I used to ship the iPod to them for free.

3. Apple doesn't repair your original iPod, but sends you a refurbished one. I'd be angry about that, but this is the only refurb replacement unit of any piece of electronics that I've ever had which has worked like new. It's still working to this day (Aug 2006.)

Still Working (dropped it...10 times?)

by jbutt_mcse - 8/12/06 10:17 AM In reply to: IPODs Fail After Just Over 1 Year? by davidefulton

I bought an open box/slightly used iPod photo from Best Buy in May. I've dropped it a lot but it's still going(clicks a bit).

Look at is this way:
People don't buy their children laptops until they think the kids are old enough to not drop a very expensive piece of equipment.

iPods are essentially laptops; hard drive, software, stores and retrieves files; they only thing is they're smaller and totally pre-packaged.

Everyone knows how easily damaged laptops are. Dropping them once is all it takes to completely erase your data.

When looked at from this angle, it's no surprise that iPods crash a lot, especially ones given to children. How often do these things get dropped? Once a week? They get dragged everywhere, thrown in backpacks, sweated on, shown off on the playground... The amazing thing isn't that they crash, it's that they are so much more reliable than laptops and desktops and can take so much more abuse.

Apple vs. All the Others

by forkboy - 8/14/06 8:29 PM In reply to: IPODs Fail After Just Over 1 Year? by davidefulton

My daughter and I bought Shuffles last year in March. Her's just died a few weeks ago. No, she didn't drop or otherwise abuse it. Just died. Mine still works though. But I wanted a much largers capacity unit so I did my homework and opted to purchase, tonight, a Creative Zen M. Sure-iPod probably has 85-95% of the market so they should be skewed to have more reliability issues because there are more of their units out there. But I read one too many stories like many of yours and opted to try another manufacturer. I don't know that Creative will be any better, but after my daughter's Shuffle's premature death (and my sister having to return TWO Apple notebooks for manufacturer defects right out of the box!) I opted to put my money elsewhere.

Ipod...you have to wonder

by oneshadeofred - 8/15/06 11:10 PM In reply to: IPODs Fail After Just Over 1 Year? by davidefulton

My friends daughter (14) worked last summer to buy her IPOD, then it broke this summer. Her mother bought her a new one this year and her younger daughter one, but this time she bought the warranties. Are the warranties worth it though? Sometimes, it's just simpler to go with the cheap MP3.

ipod nano screen went blank after 8 months

by mckenzi16 - 9/6/06 1:10 PM In reply to: IPODs Fail After Just Over 1 Year? by davidefulton

Yes, my IPOD Nano screen went blank, although songs still played after 8 months of use. The problem occured right after I did an update of the Ipod at the Apple site. Fortunately I was able to take it to an Apple Store in Annapolis Maryland and they just gave me a new one, they claimed that the problem was caused by a power surge. The screen was compleylu blank except for a small copper colored line at the bottom and it would not reset or allow it to be restored. I am glad that they took care of it quickly.

Report Products That Fail On Purpose!

by podcastgalaxy - 1/3/07 3:35 PM In reply to: IPODs Fail After Just Over 1 Year? by davidefulton

I found a site that you can report your failing or failed products which may help in the future when you go to buy a product. Visit http://www.designedtobreak.com and let them know what has failed, especially iPods, and maybe we can get these companies to build better products in the future!
