I have a compaq v2404 us and my niece slammed the cd/dvd drive back into its base now it will not open or respond when i hit any buttons. If i get an external cd/dvd drive will it work on my laptop,or can I replace that one myself?I know these Question could be lame but I'm trying to save as much money as I can.
The drive maybe simply jammed into place. Try prying using a bent into a hook a paperclip and pull on it around door. However, some drives do have a "manual" eject hole, that a "straghten" paperclip fits into and push on it once you find the hole, if no hole then manually pull using the other method. The mechicanism of the drive broken or slammed so bad, it went beyond its "tracking path", some gearing or stop has broken and jammed. You will need to replace, if its a simple drop-out item or open laptop, etc. to physically remove it and replace unit. As for parts replacement, google for your model and see what you get. Otherwise, a USB outside drive will work if you have USB ports. Find a drive that uses its own power wart rather than USB provided to lessen any strain on your battery and laptop overall.

Can i use a dvd burner instead or a dvd rom and will it be able to run the dvd program from the burner?
DVD burners can write to CDs and DVDs. This is in addition to the ability to read CDs and DVDs.
