damm kids

by legerej - 8/1/06 9:08 AM

my daughter pc has caught a nasty virus or spyware and has rendered her internet connection useless - she lives a fair distance from me so any advice to repair the fault (she no longer has os disk)before I leave would be great.

All i know about her pc is that it's running xp pro and her processor is 800mhz

also does any one know of any (free) cnet downloads that i can burn to cd and take with me which will help me with her problem

Many thanks

Some links...

Avast! anti-virus is free for 30 days, and if you register it they'll send you an e-mail with with a long number, so you can use it for a whole year.

http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html

After that, register for another year....

"Adware SE Personal" is one of the best spyware removal tools.

Good luck,

Ewido:
Download and install after you get Internet running. I like the program, but you can't install a definitions file manually.

WINSOCKXPFIX.EXE:
Get this to fix registry if virus/spyware removal leaves Internet connection damaged.

FIREWALL:
Download free ZoneAlarm. Install after PC is clean.

KNOPPIX Live CD:
Download and burn this Linux distribution to CD. You can boot the computer with this and get on the Internet, download files, recover files from the hard drive, et al.
http://www.knoppix.org/

* * * * *

Scan in SAFE MODE with System Restore off.
Scan with at least one antivirus program. Scan with at least two antispyware programs.

Online antivirus scan after Internet is working:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

After PC is clean, get Windows XP updated to SP2, and run Windows Update to get that PC up to date.

Have her check with the PC maker to see how much a replacement XP CD will cost.

High school/college students = P2P music/video downloaders (Kazaa!, Limewire, etc.). These programs are open doors to spyware/malware that will hose a PC. Tell her not to use them.

Hope this helps.

I never noticed that Ewido full database signature link, so I assumed that the database couldn't be updated manually for the free version. Very helpful. Thanks, Grif!

Naked XP over Broadband

by horse7 - 8/4/06 1:13 PM In reply to: some tools by linkit

If you are installing naked XP (no SPs) and the machine is broadband connected, download the service update CD from MS so that you can install security patches before the machine is re-infected-- i.e., install XP w/o broadband, install the security patches from CD, then connect to the iNet. The mean time to infection is considerably less than an hour over broadband for unprotected machines, you will never get all the security patches installed before a good chance of infection ESPECIALLY at a university.

It is hard to find the service CD, it is generally hidden somewhere under servers and administration on the microsoft website. It is intended for administrators who have a lot of machines to update, but they really should make it easier to find for people who have licensed XP Pro SP0 (like me) and need to rebuild a machine... without being infected along the way waiting for downloads from MS.

Just another gaping security hole for the unwary.

a couple more things

by GoodTimeCharlie - 8/4/06 7:22 AM In reply to: damm kids by legerej

Along with setting up the PC with an anti-virus program, 2 spyware checkers (AdAware & Spybot S & D), and a firewall (ZoneAlarm) I would also install/set-up:

1. A ''Start-Up'' control utility ... can prevent hacker programs from installing in the first place and also can help prevent them from re-installing themselves after you 'clean them out' since some set themselves up to re-install periodically). Two that I use myself are: ''Startup Inspector'' (friendlier) and ''Startup Control'' (quicker & has delete history).

2. Set-up Internet Explorer to have a pop-up, adware, spyware checker active while browsing. Internet Explorer has a built in one (under tools) and you can add their ''defender'' (free). Yahoo offers a free toolbar with one that has a adware/spyware checker & some nice features.

3. Also you can install an internet 'site' checker that will put a colored check mark by sites when you google them, etc indicating if they are believed to be 'clean' (a green checkmark) or 'dirty' (a red checkmark) as far as pop-ups and/or spyware/adware. Note: I'm not talking about NetNanny, etc., to prevent porn sites ... she is a big girl now). I can't remember which one I have installed on my home PC (I'm at work now so can't look). This isn't as critical, but may help remind or tip her off to watch where she's going.

What you want to do is PREVENT the PC from getting trashed rather repetively having to clean it up (Note: Set Spybot S & D to ''immunize'' the PC!).

I'm sorry I don't have the links availible for all I discussed (again, I'm at work).

Make sure she knows: a) that she needs to 'look for updates' for ALL of these products, b) how to get/install updates (including re-immunizing), and last, c) to do so regularly!!!

Good Luck,

Free may not always do the trick

by yshemi - 8/4/06 8:07 AM In reply to: damm kids by legerej

I've been a big supporter of free programs like Ad-Aware but this program and Spybot did not help my brother with a similar situation.

The only program that worked for him and returned control of his internet, browser, and probably PC overall, was Spyware Doctor from PC Tools (which will allow you to do a free scan but in order to remove infections you have to purchase the license).

I purchased [on CD] Spyware Doctor when I wasn't having any issues with my PC. My Ad-Aware SE said I had zero infections. I ran Spyware Doctor and it identified 100 still on the PC.

My brother had 43 identified with Spybot, and cleaned them from the PC with the tool and still did not get control back. He even purchased another software title (don't recall what it was) and that didn't work.

He broke down, got Spyware Doctor, and not only identified over 100 infections that other tools missed on his PC but got full control back.

Prevent phishing

by tek-ed - 8/4/06 10:27 AM In reply to: Free may not always do the trick by yshemi

There are three tools that are imperative.
If you got infected once, you will get infected again unless you take extreme measures.
Get these:
1) Google toolbar. This will help with those annoying popups;
2) Netcraft Antiphishing toolbar. This will actually prevent you from visiting known phishing sites. Thousands of people every day submit phishing sites to Netcraft. Netcraft is well known and well established in the internet community.
3) MVPS HOSTS file is a free download from:
This is a list (over 4,000 entries) of known advertisers, web-bots and tracker sites that are redirected to the harmless IP 127.0.0.1 (your machine's loopback IP) Put this list into your hosts file and NEVER see another advertisement again!

for GoodTimeCharlie's advice . . .

by Wanna B Ageek - 8/4/06 11:36 AM In reply to: damm kids by legerej

Hi . . .
I think GoodTimeCharlie -- in his Item #3 -- is thinking of McAfee's SiteAdvisor. It can be gotten for Internet Explorer or for Firefox. Go to www.siteadvisor.com for the free download. I have Firefox, and I just began using it yesterday. Seems to work fine, yet is unobtrusive.

Post 12 of 20

yep ... it was McAfee's SiteAdvisor I couldnt remember

by GoodTimeCharlie - 8/10/06 6:57 AM In reply to: for GoodTimeCharlie's advice . . . by Wanna B Ageek

Thanks Wanna B ... I couldn't remember the name at the time (senior moment).

Like you it it seems to work well and yet not slow me down, etc.

More stuff to bring

by McCoyPauley - 8/4/06 12:39 PM In reply to: damm kids by legerej

Lots of good suggestions dad(been there too)

I would add HijackThis if the other stuff doen't work but it will take some studying on your part.

Also, go to Steve Gibson's site (www.grc.com) for some great free stuff and www.sysinternals.com

I think the best solution (stated above) is get the rebuild disk from the manufacturer. It's a lot easier to off load your need files (free music isn't needed) and then scan them before you put them back.

Good Luck

(NT) damn kids

by iasthai22 - 8/4/06 6:02 PM In reply to: damm kids by legerej

your daughter probably did the same silly thing I did and downloaded what she thought was a prog update - that wasn't.
As a fix-it I recommend No-Adware 40. Costs about 30 bucks and gives daily updates, but the total surprise is that they give you a genuine helpline and the No-Adware people genuinely help fix your problem, rather than just take the dough and go incommunicado. They responded to my email, they kept at it for a couple of days and they fixed my problem. And I don't think they'd object to you downloading the install to your computer without installing and cd-ing it on to daughter, because they have been the most co-operative and supported software supplier I've come across. I'm a fan.
