a question on the vizio p50hdtv

For start some back ground info. If is says HDTV and was made this year it must have OTA ATSC digital tuner. IF is says HD monitor it will not have tunner. This applies to regular SD tv's 26" and up also.
You didn't give the price. Spend some time looking at other posts in this form, there have been some problems reported. Buy it from Costco and SAVE the recipt. John

VIZIO P50HDM

by BONSPEED - 8/2/06 9:07 PM In reply to: a question on the vizio p50hdtv by farishg

the p50hdm is a monitor and will need external tuner (cable/sat box/vcr). i purchased mines from costco a year ago for $2600 and it has performed flawlessly. vizio has since released a 42" version which has had some problems, but the p50hdm is their flagship model and is currently retailing for less then $2000. cnet calls it "the best 50" plasma for the money".

P50HDTV

Greg,

The P50HDTV is Vizio's 50" plasma with a built-in tuner, as opposed to the P50HDM, which was a "monitor" and required an external tuner.

Here is a link to it on their website:

P50HDTV

by Chris83 - 8/3/06 12:34 PM In reply to: P50hdtv reply by farishg

Greg,

You're welcome. I know the P50HDM got pretty good reviews, in a "This is pretty impressive for a 50" under $2K" fashion. I have not taken the HD plunge myself, but am researching and several people I emailed regarding the P50HDM gave me positive feedback.

Now the P50HDTV may be a different animal. Even though I'm sure a lot of the basic technology is the same, it IS a different product. It may be wise to wait for some reviews, or check some of online HD forums and get some feedback from people who actually tried it out.

As I said, while there were obvioulsy some flaws with the P50HDM, a 50" plasma that performs decently seems to be a pretty good deal.

Your info is out of date. See the specs for the current unit at http://www.vizioce.com/site/products/product_p50hdm.html and you'll see that there are several tuners built in.
