i am fairly new when it comes to computers. i have recently got a new pc that has a dvd burner in it.
it seems to me it is really hard to burn a dvd? i have dvd shrink, which was suggested to me. i've tried to burn a concert i have on my hd, and also tried to copy a dvd of mine, for an exercise, to see if it could be done! but i have failed on both counts.
the latest effort, i got this message 'burning failed' and that i need a dvd-r/rw disk to copy it to. the disk i was using was dvd-rw, is that not the same thing? i looked around a few shops and couldn't find dvd-r/rw disks.
how do i know whether to use + or - disks, for a start?
i wish burning dvds was like burning cds, it would be so much easier.
i've been using tdk disks. my dvd/cd-rom drive is:
TSST corp CD/DVDW SH-W162z.
oh yes. when i was told that burning had failed, it was at 1x {1,385 KB/s} could be greek to me!
No wonder you are having troubles, you bought a PeeCee, aka, Peace-o-Crap. I use my mac all day long to burn dvd's, just one click of a button and you are done. Sorry, but you are sh*t out a luck. LOL ![]()
That is the most assinine comment. What possible enjoyment could you get from posting something like that?
Rattie - here's a pretty good tutorial on using DVD Shrink. http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/
You might read over this link to get a better grasp of the different media formats.

I've only burned a few DVD myself so i don't know if I can help much with any spedific questions you may have beyond this though.
A Mac is not a perfect machine. I've been burning DVDs for years on my PeeCee with zero problems. I burn data and movies.
I'm sure you got it right the first time you tried. Everyone has to learn.
"dvd-r/rw" means that you can use DVD-R or DVD-RW discs (two different types).
What are you attempting to burn? Data, movies, copy a DVD?
What software are you using to do this?
Some of the programs you will need, is dvd decrypter, anydvd, and nero. Use dvd-rw for storing any files. Dvd-r
is good for movies. Good places to start is afterdawn.com and videohelp.com.
step 1: Ignore jacoblundquist. I got a DVD/RW drive a year or two ago and have yet to burn a single coaster. It might take a bit more work than a Mac, but with a little bit of research and caution, you can burn pretty much anything with a PC.
step 2: Look up the tutorials recommended by the other posters here. I use DVDShrink and the copy of Nero that came with my drive (note: use "Nero Burning ROM", not "Nero SmartStart")
step 3: Burn and enjoy!
-----
NOTE 1: Copying DVDs for friends (or from friends) is illegal, and while making backup copies for yourself is also technically illegal (stupid DMCA regulations) no one really cares about that. It's when you're making duplicates in lieu of buying the DVD that you'll get in trouble.
NOTE 2: You said you're trying to burn a concert you have on your HD... I'm assuming you have an AVI or MPG of a live concert video that you want to burn to DVD. If you're content viewing it only on the computer, you can burn the video file directly to the disc as data; however, if you want it to be viewable with a set-top DVD player, you will need to use a variety of other programs to reencode the video into the proper MPEG-2 format that DVD players require. The sites suggested by the other users here should have links to tutorials that explain how to do this in detail and what programs you need.
NOTE 3: The only software you *may* need to buy is Nero Burning ROM (if you don't already have it). Every other utility you might need for making DVDs is either legitimately free, or has legitimately free alternatives (say no to piracy!).
cheers to everyone who has offered me the help i need, i will now investigate all the links and software suggested.
by the way, i have nero express, and been trying to use dvd shrink. windows xp as well.
thanks.
i've just had another go at creating a dvd, again no joy.
messages i am getting:1/ compliance test failed[what does that mean?].
2/illegal disc.
3/this is not a rewritable disc.
the discs i'm trying to use are tdk dvd-rw, thats rewritable isn't it?
actually, i'd recommend trying DVD-R discs. they're cheaper, and more set-top DVD players will read them (some cheaper and/or older players have issues with DVD-RW). also, maybe try a DVD+R disc... it's always possible your burner supports one format but not the other (+/-).
hope this gets you somewhere. if not, i'll do a little more digging and see what i can find. might be a while before i get back to you though as i'm leaving for a convention on wednesday.
