IE Explorer 6 'Not Responding'

by zero1221 - 7/20/06 4:16 PM

I am currently using the Windows ME operating system (I inherited it...). Recently, I ran AdWare to scan for SpyWares. I found some SpyWare and proceeded to delete. I then ran a Virus scan and found none. Since then, every time I try to access IE, the page freezes. It always comes back as 'Not Responding.' I have also noticed that my 'Cookies' tab under Tools>Internet Options>General is missing.

Perhaps I have a virus that my Virus scan did not detect? How can find a way to use IE in order to download better Virus scan?

Things to do...

1.) Download/run IEFix, a cure-all for IE when the registry is corrupted.

2.) Click here to download WinSock XP Fix, which can repair your internet connection when damaged by malware.

3.) Click here for instructions on uninstalling Internet Explorer 6.0, then reinstall using a fresh download available here.

4.) Download and use an alternative browser such as Firefox, which is not tied into the OS and more secure overall.

5.) AdAware is an adware scanner, not a spyware scanner, though it may occasionally detect such things. I'd sugegst downloading and running SpyBot, a true antispyware program.

6.) If you find that you are unable to completely remove a virus or other piece of malware, restart your computer in Safe Mode (press F8 during boot) and run the scan there. You may also need to disable System restore to purge the current restore points, a breeding ground for malware.

7.) Once you get your internet connection up and running, click here to run HouseCall, a free online scan that offers a second opinion.

Hope this helps,
John

P.S. Since you can't download those programs on your computer, use someone else's and then transfer them to your computer using a flash drive, CD/DVD, etc.

IE issues

by MrRugger - 7/28/06 9:33 AM In reply to: Things to do... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

IE stopped working for me yesterday. When I click on it the browser opens and then it closes as fast with no error message or explaination of any kind. I've tried unistalling via the add remove windows programs and then reinstalling, dumping temp files rebooting the IE fix .exe etc... No Luck. The only thing that worked was installing Firefox which works like a charm so far. If you have any clues on IE let me know, but thanks for the idea of Firefox. For now at least I can still keep on trucking..... cheers
