Hi Im custom building a new pc.... and I dont want to buy Windows XP...
I have a computer with XP, so can I put that hardrive in the new setup
Its a stupid question... but I dont want to make a mistake...
Thanks
Will detect the change and the OS will not only need all the drivers for the new machine but will want to reactivate.
Since you didn't tell enough about the XP you own now, I can't tell you if you will have an issue.

You can change your motherboard in an existing machine and still maintain the same o/s, but I would reckon that
changing the CPU as well, would cause a reactivation demand. I have no proof of this, not having done it, perhaps others will comment. I think the solution is to try it and see.
...the HD will work, but the existing copy of XP will not.
For the least amount of issues when building a new computer, I find it best to perform a fresh installation of XP on a newly partitioned and formatted HD. Don't forget to install all the drivers that come with the motherboard and the rest of your hardware (XP installation drivers alone are inadequate).
You can activate the XP installation if it is a full RETAIL version.
If your XP license came with your old computer or you had installed an OEM copy, then Microsoft will disallow your activating it on the new machine. Why is this bad? After 30 days, your XP installation becomes unusable.
