If you don't want to do a repair install, and you have an XP disk, use the Recovery Console:

i did back up my computer files via Windows Live one care
have you tried restore by entering safe mode this way you wont need to enter windows or borrow someones xp disc .
Link here for guidance how to enter Safe Mode;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222
When you're there, use the arrow keys to select "Last Known Good Configuration: This option starts Windows by using the previous good configuration", then press Enter.
Good luck.

Start your computer from safe mode with command prompt. You must be an administrator or have admin. rights.
When you get to the command prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe then press enter.This will put you at the system restore window.Good luck.
when i pressed ctnrl f11 to get system restore, i got a message saying "ntkrnlmp.exe not loaded error code 14". but it normally sez "(windowsroot)\system32\hall.dll not found"
