Sounds Like Your Drive Went Bad

I've seen them go bad in less than a year (sony)

You can try slaving it off IDE0 (hard Drive Channel) to eliminate a bad IDE1 channel (CD) but really not worth the trouble.

If you have ANY other Optical drive that's known good, swap it outto test

check if the data cable is connected properly at both the ends....if then, go with IDE1 as slave..

IDE1

IDE1 Channel doesn't care if the device hooked to it is master/slave/whatever, if there is only 1 device on it that device will be recognised regardless of jumper settings.

I have a machine set-up for data recovery with a hot swap on IDE1 & can throw anything in there I want.

Fooling around with jumpers isn't going to bring an optical drive back to life!

The light is from the power only and it would open/close

But go to you Control Panel, System Icon to Hardware Tab Device Manager and it should be listed under Display Adapters. If there is a yellow ? or ! mark, there is something wrong and a red x is even worse, it is disabled. You have to hit the plus sign were it has CD/DVD-ROM. It may be dead. Darrell Lewis

Same Exact Problem

by rolando_jr - 7/21/06 2:14 PM In reply to: Cd-dvd-rom by AndyHoppy

I have the same issue. Thought the original drive was toast so I replaced the TSST cd/dvd with a new HP Lightscribe, yellow exclamation mark remains in device manager. Tried Master /Slave instl with both drives, no change. Uninstalled/ reinstalled devices multiple times, wasted 45 minutes with HP tech support and 3 evenings with "Gateways Award Winning Service"... BIOS recognizes the drives, NERO can see them but cannot use them. Seems to be a known issue with windows, error code comes back as "error 19" registry stuff. There is a problem with filters in the registry that seems to be debris left over from "Easy/Roxio" cd/dvd software uninstall. Wiping these out will clear this up for some people, (I'm not one of them). Getting ready to try a windows reinstall with an external drive. Somebody please save me from the hassle!!!
