I know how to use a pc well. I have both a Mac and PC. SInce day one the PC has given me trouble . So which spyware and adware do you recommend for free. I always had antispyware and it would check every night for viruses and it never found viruses butmy internet was slow and acting funny. To make it worse i reinstalled Internet explorer thining that was the problem and it made it worse . So i did a system restore and now trying to find the right ADWARE and ANTI SPYWARE . I did a free scan test to see if i have viruses and Windows LIve found a couple of Trojans and other unable to clean. So system restore did nothing

XP One step at a time.

by Maisie663 - 7/20/06 10:06 AM In reply to: thanks but by artchick

Download AVG Free version to get rid of those viruses, then add Adaware SE which is free, it will scan for cookies and other anoyances,it also blocks browser hijacks, consider two other freebies Spy Bot Search and Destroy and Spyware Blaster. If you have Windows XP you have a firewall, I have used that sence I bought this computor two years ago, don't tell me they don't work and alot of people can tell you. If a Trojan or Hacker is going come in, he will take your whole operating system. Another good one to be on your computor regular is Windows Defender. Then evaluate your system and don't do an over kill--one step at a time and be careful what soft ware venders tell you to promote their wares. Keep everything up to date and good luck.

Subject of Spyware/Malware and anti-virus, use one anti-virus system - your choice - and at least 2 or even 3 Adaware programmes, one of which should be Ewido.

Personally I use Trend Micro Internet Security for anti-virus (it also has it's own firwall), Ad-aware 1.06r1, Spybot S & D, SpywareBlaster and CWSShredder from Trend Micro.

Keep them all up-to-date and run scans on a regular basis.

However, I seem to remember some article or other not too long ago that said Mac' and PC's could not be connected by LAN too well, perhaps Mike would comment on that, it certainly seems that the LAN connection between your two machines is at fault.

Good advice from Maisie and Themisive

although I tend to not trust the Windows Firewall, but many people do, and have no problems.

But I think you need to understand a little more about all this malware, because you said that your Microsoft AntiSpyware scans every night and has never found any viruses. Microsoft AntiSpyware, (now replaced by Windows Defender), looks for spyware, not viruses. Here's a short review of what you need to protect your computer from malware;

1] A Firewall - This attempts to prevent hackers who may try to take over your computer and use it for themselves, a bit like a Firedoor in a building tries to prevent a fire from spreading.

A firewall should be two way. That's because if by chance you have already been hacked, or if you have some "spyware", then the firewall will prevent any unauthorised data from being phoned home.

2] Viruses. These are small packets of programs that, once allowed to run on your system, can do various things. They can damage/delete/change existing files. They can also deliver spyware which will attempt to spy on you and your computer usage.

3] Spyware These are also small programs that can do a variety of things. They can spy on which web sites you go to. They can try and obtain personal information from you, eg name, address, credit card details, usernames and passwords for secure sites such as banking sites.

A cookie is a type of spyware. Most web sites have them and when you visit a web site it will download a cookie onto your computer. This is usually to help you when you next visit the same web site with, for eg, your login details. But some cookies track where you go in web sites, which links you visit, so that they can target adverts for you when you next visit.

4] Adware Sometimes these are cookies, sometimes they are programs that attach to your browser and cause popup ads, or cause your browser to re-direct to their own web pages.

How many do you need of both?

Firewalls? Just the one. If you have more, they can conflict, eg one might try and oen a door to let data in, and the other might try to close the door.

Anti-Virus? Just the one that always runs in the background. Any more and there can be conflicts.

Anti-virus programs need their virus definitions updated regularly, either daily or 3 or 4 times a week.

You can use online anti-virus checkers, but only as a backup

Anti-Spyware? As many as you like, although generally 3 or 4 good ones are sufficient.

Only one needs be running in the background all the time, but use the others frequently to scan for spyware that your main one doesn't pick up.

Most good anti-spyware programs now treat all adware as spyware, so in my opinion you don't need a separate anti-adware program.

I hope this helps.

router firewall

by linkit - 7/20/06 2:01 PM In reply to: thanks by artchick

I didn't see it mentioned anywhere and you may already be doing this, but your computers also should be behind a router with a built-in firewall. This is in addition to the personal firewall installed on the Windows XP computer.

A two-way personal firewall like free ZoneAlarm will give you the option to permit/deny programs from accessing the internet.

Just being thorough.
