VHS to DVD conversion
by skppr1 - 3/10/06 11:13 AMI just watched a "Martha" segment that demonstrated copying retail VHS tapes to DVD for personal use on a Sony VHS to DVD copier. It was stated this is legal under the "fair use" law. Does anyone know about this? I have so many children's VHS tapes that I want to save by copying them to DVDs but can't due to the ocpy right problems. I can't find this product.

I don't think anyone would come knocking on my door if I were to convert my vhs tapes to dvd (I don't care what they say; in my mind "fair use" is legal). If they have their way, we'd be paying them every time that we watch it.

The day is not far off when VHS players will be as difficult to find as LP turntables.
There seems to be a download option available at some sites but those I have seen so far all come with McAfee SiteAdvisor warnings.
The 'fair users' seem to be caught between difficult choices.

However, the dvd recorder will not copy tapes with copy protected though. But I am sure there are devices out there that can defeat the protection (I can't name any because I don't use one). Maybe check some stores like bestbuy/radioshack and see if they have such device.

I'll leave this comment here for the benefit of anyone else who might be looking at the VHS to DVD recorder which I initially bought, unaware of copyright protection. This was the Zenith VCR/DVD Recorder Model #ZRY-316. It was not made clear in the advertising that commercial tapes could not be copied but ... caveat emptor. I should have known that. However, it broke down within a week while transferring home videos to DVD. The repair was covered under the 90 day guarantee but took about a month. While using it next as a tape player, the VHS side broke down a couple of weeks later. Two weeks after that the DVD side quit working. Rather than hassle with the manufacturer about whether the 90 day guarantee still applied I junked it. Caveat emptor.
