PCI Express or AGP?

Before doing anything, which type of interface will you be using for the video card? Most any card with 256 Megs of memory will work, but Aero also depends on your processor to run correctly. If you don't have a pretty powerful processor, at least 2 Gigabytes of system memory, a REALLY large hard drive and a pretty powerful video card you won't get Aero glass to run with its full potential.

Graphics Card

Nvidia's FX Series and up should work, I'm not sure about ATI's cards but I think the 9 series and up should work.
I have an Nvidia FX 5200 with 128 megs of memory, and it works just fine. It's about $49.99.

Aero

Just about any Decent Nvidia card today is considered Vista ready. Actually they are now starting to say designed for vista. But Spend as much as you can. Aero takes some serious graphics power. More than most of the games that are out now. If you want it to be quick to react to input and not keep giving you the option to turn off the aero desktop all the time get a good one. I personally would recommed the 78 or 7900 Gt from the BFG company. I bought one and for the money it really rocks allthough dual Sli is the real setup. Thats two video cards that each have sli on them which adds to 4 video processors. The benchmarks are about 400 percent what I get with a 7900 GT oc card. And thats a fast card. With XP it is great. As much as possibly needed for games or whatever but in vista it recommends that I turn off aero to have better performance on the desktop. If that aint a load I dont know. Vista is graphics hungry. Buy as much as you can afford. Read @ Nvidia.com about each type and what they are for. It will help you decide. Graphics power in a computer is like horsepower in a car. It cost lots to go fast. How fast do you feel is adequate . Also if you purchase from a local store and are not happy with the performance, you can always return and upgrade. I did three times. Twice on audio. Ended up with X-fi Platinum before I was satisfied.
