Advice for upcoming HDTV purchase?

by mjb4385 - 7/6/06 7:50 PM

First topic here, but I've been reading and doing research for awhile now. Would appreciate any help!

I'm looking for an LCD or Plasma set for a medium size room, we'd probably sit around 8 feet or so from the television. I have a couple of questions for those of you in the know.

1) For that kind of room and viewing distance, would you go with a 40" or 46"

2) What do you think of those Sony Bravias that took a price drop on Amazon? I see the 46" is $2800, that seems right up my alley, especially if the new 46" will be $4500

3) 1080p -- I'm a gamer, looking forward to PS3. But if I get a 40" or 46" LCD, would I still notice a difference? I am willing to pay more and wait a couple months for the new Bravias, but not if it's just not going to be worth it

I really appreciate the help, I've read through a ton of posts and feel a bit swamped. Thank you!

New Bravias

by Dan Filice - 7/6/06 9:15 PM In reply to: Advice for upcoming HDTV purchase? by mjb4385

From what I've read, the new Bravias will be "Native 1080p", so the set won't upconvert. May not make a huge difference to a normal viewer, but if the PS3 is spitting out 1080p why not wait to have a TV with the proper connection? Otherwise, my friend just bought the Bravia 46" 720p set and it's very very nice.

first of all, bigger is always better. if you plan to watch any dvds, the annoying black bars that come with the many different aspect ratio movies will make the screen even smaller.

the price drop your noticing is probably due to the fact that sony is getting ready to push their 1080p input capable sets to go along with the ps3 debute later this year. whether there is a "noticable" picture improvement remains to be seen. however, the lesser analog version ps3 will work with the current 1080p (1080i input conversion) sets.

Value of older Bravias

by mjb4385 - 7/7/06 9:09 AM In reply to: DITTO by BONSPEED

Thanks for the opinions so far, I guess I'm concerned that the 1080p sets won't be worth the almost $2K extra than these older Bravias that took the price drop. I guess it's tough to say without looking at a proper source (or the actual TV).

I should have gone to CES this year! ;-)

Since you're a gamer...

won't you really want that 1080p? Since the time is coming soon, shouldn't you wait to be able to do the whole darn thing right? Then you won't regret the time element and additional cost when you've got the whole ball of wax.

Of course, shouldn't we all attend the CES for fun?

1080p is worth it

by abedoy - 7/9/06 6:05 PM In reply to: Advice for upcoming HDTV purchase? by mjb4385

i work at circuit city and we are totally sold out of our samsung 1080p projections and our sonys. every one says they looke the best on digital signals and hd and wen they hav their 1080p demos or blu ray they look way better than anything else we hav. everyone says they look the best and that is y they r sold out. if u r a gamer it will make an even bigger differece bc resolution makes a bigger impact than anythign else on graphics. try playing a computer game on different resolutions n u will see wat i mean. 1080p is really worth it especially for games

1080p is worth it????

The new Samsung 1080p sets are using the lasest 1080 Ti DLP chip, YES they have a excellent picture. The Sony/JVC 1080 sets are still better, 3 chips, no color wheel.
Don't forget about all the advertising FUD that is out there about 1080p. John

JVC/Sony LCoS

Since they are around the same price I would get the Sony. I have heard both good and bad about the JVC ones, but only good about the Sony SXRD sets. I was close to buying a JVC 1080p tv, but backed out when I realized I should just wait for the new SXRDs to come out.

Sony SXRD

by kena10 - 7/29/06 7:47 AM In reply to: Advice for upcoming HDTV purchase? by mjb4385

Get the 50". For the budget you're working with, you should be able to get one at that price or well below it. Yres, the SXRD will be capable of working with the PS3 and it's 1080p native, so don't worry about it not being able to accept a 1080p input.

You shouldn't see a big difference in 1080i vs. 1080p. Those people on this forum that are dead set on thinking that there's a huge difference should definitely talk to John about it so he can school them.

I know this reply comes in rather late but, better late than never.

I concur

Get the 50" SXRD...I have had my eye on this model for a while now and when my current HDTV runs its course I will get an SXRD. They aren't THAT expensive compared to plasmas and others. I think Crutchfield has a sale on them right now, or at least they did.
