Monitoring my Child's activities on the internet

by maxtro71 - 7/8/06 1:30 PM

Hi Friends,

I need a solution that works effectively and is available as Free. My child has become 16 now and I doubt his search habits and browsing habits is not right for his age.

He is smart enough to delete history and cookies files so I dont even know what he did. He does not even disclose his email passwords.

I simply want to watch his activities so that I can give him right counselling.

I heard of winvestigator but it asks for buying.

please suggest an effective and working remedy for me.

thanks

google desktop might just do the trick

Well, the real problem here is there is almost always going to be a way around monitoring software, espescially if the user knows that it is installed. So, you just have to get tricky. I am a 17 year old, and while I personally don't use the internet for such questionable activities, I have plenty of friends who do, and because I'm the computer nerd of the group, guess who has to clean up their messes? So I've seen a good deal of crap that teenage boys look at on the internet. Anyway, if you want to know jsut about everything he's looking at, but don't want him to know that you're activiely looking at his browsing habits, I suggest you get google desktop search (please bear with me). Google desktop indexes every site that you visit, and makes a cached copy in case it can no longer be visited. It can be hidden to run in the background, and guess what? It doesn't look suspicious! It has many, many other uses than just recording browsing habits. You can set a password to access your index database I am fairly sure (though i don't think I have ever done so so don't quote me on that), but you should have no problems as he, like all of my friends, probably won't even realize its doing this. If you need any help figuring out how to check the index history, just ask. Good luck!

It sounds to me like you're fairly certain about the type of content he's seeking out online... do you really need the nitty-gritty? Talk to the kid instead of doing something that's going to breed further mistrust and resentment.

Oh, and the email passwords thing - come on! That's way over the line.

JUST SET INTERNET CONTROLS.........................

by Scrotes4Life - 7/10/06 6:30 PM In reply to: Monitoring my Child's activities on the internet by maxtro71

Just password protect - enable the controls in Internet Options. It works. I have one that will be 16 Sept. 28.
He can't go any farther than you let him. If you are worried about places like "My Space" - put it on the restricted sites block.
Mine deleted Internet Explorer trying to get around it - I had BSD for two days - that's how long it took to straighten everything out. What a genius !!!
The biggest problem that I have is that the kids never run Spyware scans and never clean out the junk files. They don't want to be bothered with waiting for the automatic updates either. Whether he likes it or not, he'll have to give you his password so you can go in and do all that after bedtime.
Carry on.
