Zonealarm update website informs me it won't be supporting win9x/me anymore. The time table has been set so what will be the replacement form some other vendor, anyone? Any clue as to fallback plans as too many win9x users are just not capable of upgrading to XP or even W2K w/o mucho investment if worth it. Open to suggestions and comments. -----Willy
One of the problems I ran into with my software applications was that Windows 95 support was becoming problematic. When I did have to fix an issue it was not my software at fault yet the really great thing was I was able to add the repair to my billing.
Your notes are similar to when DOS and Windows 3.1 fell off the support map. Remember then?
The same points you made were made then.

What product? Zonealarm will go away from win9x/Me soon and as I stated many a win9x/Me user will have to think more than s/w but a whole new system. So, as anyways that's abit hard to shallow(sp) and I know as in the past even that won't deter many users and simply move to the next "supporting product" rather than do a complete overhaul or buy anew. So, what is the next firewall that will give some users relieve until then or the big day they have to walk away from it. I like to offer suggestion(s) to such users. -----Willy
The current version doesn't expire and as a firewall (unlike an antivirus) doesn't need updates to any database of threats.
Just like the OS, why change?
As to other firewalls, there are many do please look around.

Windows 95/98 & ME Have Been "De-Supported" by Microsoft. And in fact Microsoft only provides limited support for Windows XP (gold) and Windows XP SP1.
Windows 95 is over 11 years old. Windows 98 is over 8 years old. Windows ME is over 6 years old. All of these had/have Y2K issues to a greater/lesser extent.
It's time to move on, and yes that might mean upgrading some hardware/trashing the old machine. I recently built a whole new machine with a Pentium 4 class processor for about $300.
In addition, Zone Labs isn't the only vendor removing support in their product for those old operating systems; others are doing it as well. Intel for example has removed support in the latest drivers for their motherboards, integrated ethernet adapters, and integrated video adapters.
Lastly, by going with new hardware and configuring it properly, you will likely be much more environmentally friendly "green" due to better power management capabilities of the hardware and CURRENT operating systems.
Nothing in your post seems to make these old OSes stop working.
Why change?

With no support from the vendor, security threats which emerge every day do not get fixed. You're basically running on a ticking time bomb.
I am really surprised that I would even have to point this out.
Read it here:

One of the highlights: "improved security".
Was XP when it shipped, "more secure" than Windows 98se?
You seem to be eating what they are selling. Here's what I'm asking. What's your experience with Windows 98? Here I could use it except for that one thing I'm doing which is video editing. If it wasn't for that, my old tank would run 98.
The work machines just so you know have XP SP2 and 2000 SP4.

Based on your reply, I am guessing it is another way to say "stupid question".
Hey, I can post stupid questions too: Is Windows 98 SE "more secure" than Windows XP as it exists now?
Here's the one-word answer: No.
Here's another question: Will the "security gap" between Windows 98 SE and Windows XP widen, narrow or stay the same as time goes by, considering that Windows XP is supported by the vendor and Windows 98 SE is not.
Anyway I am not going to debate you any further because you just post dumb questions and offer nothing of substance in reply.
The point of my original reply was to point out that Microsoft has officially de-supported the version of Windows that you are so fond of, and that this is why the vendors of ancillary products are starting to drop their support also.
I do hope that you're not a computer administrator in your business environment - anybody in this capacity who chooses to continue to run on de-supported software, when running a business critical application, is just tempting fate (mid-life career change).
Windows 98se is more secure than XP as it stands even now. 98se has no "services" to exploit. I don't expect you to understand this area so no offense is intended.
It's not just you that is eating what is being written by media and pundits.

here,here.well said.
I really don't see how upgrading is going to make me any more "green". I'd argue the exact opposite; making me unnecessarily toss a perfectly functional system towards the landfill to replace it with one that will require twice as much power to push 3 or 4 times as much code through a CPU to accomplish the same tasks hardly sounds like a “green” solution to me. Although newer PCs may be more efficient on a energy usage-per-clock-cycle basis, most do not use any less power than previous generations.
I’ve got plenty of clients still plugging along on their W98SE machines, and for the tasks they do they have little need or desire to upgrade. The only thing “green” here is cash heading towards suppliers as another unnecessary upgrade is forced upon users.
Try this one. It's great!
AVG Firewall
Supports all these platforms and more.
MS Windows 98
MS Windows Me
MS Windows NT
MS Windows 2000
MS Windows XP
MS Windows XP Pro
At least as good as Zone Alarm and in my opinion better and defintely cheaper.
