Internal Cache...

by jgvillan - 6/25/06 7:50 PM In reply to: Question about cache by dcardozo

I wouldn't worry about this too much if you are not a gamer. The size of the L2 cache does determine (in most respects) how fast the CPU can process an application and/or multiplcation of binary numbers within a program. That can also be said on how much RAM you have. For both, the more (cache/RAM) you have, the faster it gets. Think of it this way....CPU cache is the size of a peice of paper....RAM is the size of a desk. The larger it is, the more infromatin you can throw in all at once. When either gets 'full", it clears out the memory from their respective fields and start all over again for the new information.

I would tend to agree that if you have the opportunity to get a laptop with 1MB or 2MB of L2 cache, go for it. But all in all, you'll not regret having 512MB of L2 cache. If you really want the process to speed up alittle, and from what I know so far, you'll be grading the RAM. So you wont really have an issue. My DV8110us is a Turion 512MB cache, and to be honest, I don't even think about it slowing down. My 1GB RAM is all that I need.

I know the description is somewhat inaccurate, but that is the easiest way to tell people about the roles between Cache and RAM.

I hope that this clears things up alittle, and good luck.

ooppss...convert all the cache memory from MB to K

by jgvillan - 6/25/06 7:56 PM In reply to: Internal Cache... by jgvillan

My fault....not sure why I didn't catch this before hand, but all the cache memory I was talking about was in K (kilobytes), not MB (megabytes). RAM is still in MB...:-)

Sorry for the confusion.

Good analogy on cache/RAM

by dcardozo - 6/26/06 3:49 PM In reply to: ooppss...convert all the cache memory from MB to K by jgvillan

Yeah, I caught that. I liked the analogy of cache = what fits in a sheet of paper vs. RAM = what fits on top of my desk (spread out, I guess). That would make the hard disk = all my stuff in my desk drawers, close but away from sight, right?

Hard drive would be the desk drawers...

To be honest, I never considered that, but yeah...the hard drives would be the desk drawers. I guess we both learned alittle something...:-)

OMG... I finally bought it!

by dcardozo - 7/4/06 8:00 AM In reply to: Looking into an HPdv8210us to replace desktop by dcardozo

Omigod, omigod... the dv8210us that was $1249 at CompUSA went down to $849 with rebates for two days, so I bit, and left with my BRAND NEW LAPTOP! Did purchase the 2-yr extended warranty for $249. The extra memory, the Targus case, all in good time. Also signed up for the 60-day trialware on MS Office and Norton, hope I'm not sorry later. Great screen image, and the speakers are all right (tested Yahoo Launchcast Music). Size/weight is all right by me, I'm 6'3'' and it doesn't feel puny on my lap. My 5'3'' wife isn't complaining yet: FINALLY she can get to surf the net in bed instead of on my cramped desk a room away. And I can be surfing or working something else at the same time. Hello 21st century!

Pardon my enthusiasm, but it's been almost 8 yrs since my last PC purchase, I feel like Steve Carell's 40-yr old virgin.
