Does anyone know how much Vista will be when it comes out? Or is microsoft being as secretive as apple.
The pricing scheme for Windows Vista has not been defined yet. However, it's pretty much assured that Vista Home Premium (similar to XP Media Center) will be priced similar to XP Home ($200 full and $100 upgrade), Vista Business (similar to XP Professional) will be similarly priced ($300 full and $200 upgrade). Vista Home Basic will likely be half the cost of Home Premium, while estimations on Vista Ultimate run from $300 to over $500 depending on which speculation you listed to. It's also believed that Microsoft is planning to offer incentives to those purchasing new computers this holiday shopping season, before Vista is released...free or low-priced upgrades to Vista from XP on specially-marked computers. Of course only time will tell how correct this is.

So basically the Vista Home Premium will probably cost the same as WinXP Pro. Although there is no certainty of the price of Vista. What are the speculations of the price of the OEM version ? When Vista is finally out will OEM versions hit the shelf as well?
An OEM would be the only way to get Vista out to the masses through the PC manufacturers and PC retailers.
I don't imagine Microsoft would expect non-experienced people to have to install it on their own.

It's actually an easier install than XP. Way faster and easier to configure. I run Vista Home Premium Beta 2 and did a clean install after backing up my files. The "My Documents" folder were also neatly saved in a folder named "Windows.old" and copying, for instance, the contents of the old "My Music" folder to the now named "Music" folder was slow but easy. Pleased so far after allowing for a few expected bugs:)
After all, it is still beta!
but we are talking about OEM's here, for new systems. I don't imagine everyday customers would be inclined to search for any necessary drivers for all their peripherals, software, etc. And also don't forget Admin setup, networking, etc. Things that inexperienced users might struggle with.

The minimum requirements are:
* 800MHz processor
* 512MB RAM
* 20GB hard drive
* 15GB free space
* DirectX 9 or higher
Now, that is for basic operation. If you only meet the minimum requirements you will not be given access to Aero or various included programs. (Yes, some are restricted based on graphical performance.) Furthermore, performance will be low and video and animation jerky.
The recommended requirements are:
* 1GHz processor
* 1GB RAM
* 40GB hard drive
* 15GB free space
* DirectX 9 or higher
* A supported graphics card
Of course, the more powerful the computer the better the performance will be. For the most part integrated graphics will no longer do, so you'll want a newer AGP or PCIe graphics card with at least 128MB of on-board memory. A general guideline is the ATI Radeon 9600 and higher or a Nvidia GeForce 5200 and higher. Again, the bigger the better.
Hope this helsp,
John
thanks john Should have figured the big bump in mem & graphics. I always get lots of mem looks I need to change very little on my gateway good.
That's where the lock-in begin!!!
I remember Bill Gates saying there should be $100.00 computers so everyone could afford them. Yeah, right! They could just sit there on your desk till you could afford the $200.00 for the operating system.
Thanks Bill
Since I always look for ways to avoid paying full price I have come up with a solution. Get the beta for $6 and than you wont have to pay $x for the OS.
The beta copy will expire sometime before the initial release of Vista. You don't think they'd let people keep a free copy of the OS do you?
That gives us a good idea of when Vista will actually hit the market.
Back to cost though, my husband noted that the Microsoft license for Windows XP prohibits you from transfering the OS to another computer!
Who ever first called it Windows eXPensive was right.
Windoes Vista, the vista is watching your money fly away.
