Help - Gaming vs. Entertainment Laptop

by Squilly74 - 1/29/06 6:10 PM

I'm shopping for my first laptop and I'm debating between getting a gaming or entertainment type model. I'm going to use it primarily for entertainment (watch DVDs, TV, music, etc.) but may occationally play a game. I've been looking for a Dell and narrowed it down to two models, the new E1705 and the XPS M170. The XPS is actually less expensive than the E1705 right now, and I'm assuming that the gaming XPS is good enough for any entertainment needs.
Is this a safe assumption, or do entertainment laptops specifically have something gaming laptops don't?
Here is the config I was thinking with either: (2 GHz processor, XP Media Edition, 17in WUXGA screen, 1GB memory, 256MB video card, 60GB hard drive, 8x CD/DVD burner, Wireless network caerd with blutooth, 9 cell battery)...THANKS!

Any good?

by Squilly74 - 1/30/06 6:28 AM In reply to: you may want by Qosmio

Thanks for the info...I did take a look at the Qosmio G25 in a few stores per reviews on CNET, but I have to say that I wasn't that impressed. It looked a little cheap to me. The volume control on the right looks like it could snap off prety easily, and the speaker covers were missing on the store model. I know they take a beating as display models, but I'd hate to drop it once and have the thing break into pieces. I've had Dell desktops for the past 5 years and haven't had any issues at all, so I think I may stick with a Dell for Laptops.

Owner of an Inspiron e1750

by Soulweb - 1/30/06 4:59 PM In reply to: Help - Gaming vs. Entertainment Laptop by Squilly74

I just got my Inspiron e1750 last week. I have the T2600 (2 2.16 Ghz), 1 Gig Ram, standard 256MB card, 80GB 7200 HDD, and the true color screen. I have the bluetooth as well.

For media, this can't be beat. I was very skeptical about it. It's very, very quiet even when maxing out it's processor. I installed Doom 3 on it just to try it out. It ran Doom 3 flawlessly. I cranked the game to max screen resoulution and set it to "Ultimate" and it still played incredible. Hiccuped a few times, but if you know Doom 3 this is an incredible feat for any computer much less a laptop.

Connecting it to a TV is simple. It also comes with the ability to record off the TV. It has a newer mobile Centrino (Centrino Duo) that, as of this writing, is not available on the M170.

I actually had an M170 on order. It was at the "boxing" strage when I saw the new E1750, cancelled my M170 order, and got the E1750 instead. I'm 37 and not really interested in all the lights and toys that are on the M170.

I will say that, in spite of the reviews on how efficient the duo core is with a battery, this has an average battery life of 1.6 hours! Not the 3 to 5 hours they boast for this processor. Though I highly suspect it's the Graphics card that saps the power. I also have the 6 cell, not the optrional 9 cell battery as I rarely use this unplugged.

I'm postive the Duo Core 2 Ghz would be more than enough. I used to have an Inspiron 9100 with maxed out with the 128MB graphics card and the 3.2 Ghz HT desktop processor. It sounded like a biplane when it played a game and was heavy.

I tested both laptops with 3DMark06 and the e1750 came in over 2000 points higher. Yes, 2000 points. I forgot to order the OS disc with the system (otherwise they put the backup OS on a 4.5 GB partition on your HD) and was routed to XPS support as they say the E1750 was covered under the XPS support section at Dell. ....Whatever that meant.

Anyway, that's my two cents. I love this. I am glad I didn't get the M170. The e1750 also looks very classy compared to the kiddish appearance of the M170. But that's purely a personal opinion.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate the help! I still haven't decided and may wait a week or two to see what types of rebates and coupons come up. That may sway me one way or the other...(and I'll go back to a store and check out the Qosmio again and give it another chance)
thanks again!

TV recording on E1705?

by mathdude - 1/31/06 7:19 PM In reply to: Owner of an Inspiron e1750 by Soulweb

I oredered an E1705 today, and didn't see a TV recorder as an option, unless it goes with the external TV tuner (which I decided not to get, figuring I could always get one later if it seems useful.) What exactly did you get?
I also looked at the XPS M170, but with a special short-term sale going on for the E1705, it seemed like the better value - albeit with some uncertainty about being an early adopter of a new technology.

Decided!

by Squilly74 - 2/1/06 5:30 PM In reply to: Help - Gaming vs. Entertainment Laptop by Squilly74

Thanks for the help from everyone, i appreciate it.
I actually went with the older 9300 model and suped it up as much as I could. And with one of those $650 off coupons, it wasn't that expensive. The only thing I sacrificed was the "true-life" WUXGA display...they only offer the normal display with the 9300 now. I'm sure I'llbe happy with it.
Thanks again!
