Cheapest (reliable) laptop that burns dvds?

by a4phantom - 6/22/05 7:25 PM

I will start Americorp in January and be travelling around the country, so my next computer is going to be what used to be called a laptop. I don't need anything super light, although obviously the lighter the better, and I don't need a huge hard drive. The most important factors are **reliability** and **cost**, although I'd certainly like as large a screen as possible, 512 RAM, and ideally the ability to burn DVDs although I realize that might not be possible in a cheaper notebook. Battery life is important too. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The most advanced game I'm likely to play on it is Age of Mythology, which works fine on my 1gig desktop, so I'm assuming any modern laptop should run it well - please tell me if I'm wrong!

Dead after 14 months! 2 months out of warranty! OF COURSE!

by edfiene999 - 8/2/06 2:07 PM In reply to: Compaq presario m2000 or v2000 by smiledoctor

2 months out of warranty my HP / Compaq M2000 is dead. No warning or anything. One moment everything is fine, the next, dead. Always had it plugged in and sitting idle on my desk. The most work it ever had to do was MS Word and Internet Explorer. I travelled with it only twice in a large padded laptop bag. NEVER DROPPED or anything of that nature, it was my baby. THE LAST TIME I BUY ANYTHING HP/COMPAQ. P.0.S. I WANT MY MONEY BACK ON THIS LEMON. I HAVE BOTH APPLE AND IBM LAPTOPS AND THEY ARE STILL WORKING 4+ YEARS AFTER THE SAME TYPICAL CONSUMER USE AND HANDLING!

P.S. Just saw the same unit for sale, Compaq M2000, on eBay that has also died after exactly 14 months of purchase. Coincidence?

-Tested power supply (GOOD), and battery (GOOD). Unit will not power on.

Never unplugged it?

Always had it plugged in? Just asking, how many hours do you keep the laptop plugged and how many hours do you allow it to rest?

So you never unplugged the laptop? Almost treating it like a server. Is it possible the laptop overheated since you don't unplug it?

I have an HP nx6110 that still works after more than a year of use. The rechargeable battery has a hard time holding a charge though.

I remove the rechargeable battery when I have access to outlet power/ when I'm indoors and close to a electrical socket.

This is just a personal observation, my gut tells me Compaq laptops were better prior to acquisition of Compaq by HP.

My brother has a Compaq 2100 that still works after 3 years of use.

If you're looking for reliable, Thinkpad is your best bet.

And they aren't as expensive as you might think. They have a big sale going right now. An R61 would give you the best spec/price ratio.

They have 14" and 15" models.

Cheap and reliable don't mix.

It's also about a comfortable Windows experience. 512MB RAM ain't enough for even XP these days, unless you like seeing hourglasses all day.

A Dell Inspiron 1420 is a good mix of portable form factor, reasonable weight (even with the larger 9-cell battery which will give you 4 hour+ runtime with power savings enabled)and reasonable price - $845 for the basic 1.8Ghz / 2Gb / 250Gb spec, plus Bluetooth and the integrated camera. This would ship with Vista Home Premium. All-up weight with the 9-cell battery is 6lbs, not particularly light but not bad for an entry-level laptop with the endurance of the 9-cell.

A Vostro 1400, the business equivalent of the above with Windows XP Home, a slower processor (1.6Ghz), shorter-life (<>3 hours) 6 cell battery, same resolution screen as the Inspiron, 80Gb HDD, 2Gb RAM and wifi / bluetooth / cam would come in at a hundred less than the above. The Inspiron is probably a better deal and it comes in nice lid colourways as well.

Both are specced with a 14-inch screen, which shows 1280 x 800 pixels (The Inspiron can be upgraded to 1440 x 900). You can get physically larger screens on cheap laptops, but check the resolution. e.g. there are many budget 17" monitor laptops which only displays 1280 x 800.

The IGP in both machines is the Intel X3100, which isn't exactly a blazing gaming-grade chip but passable for basic entertainment duties. I have no idea about your game but if you google X3100 and your game, perhaps you might get some hits.

Both machines come with a year's warranty but I'd definitely pay extra during the year for the additional 2 or 3-year warranty to have the peace of mind. Dell offers accidental damage insurance too, and it may be worth a look - although it might be better to insure with whoever does your home insurance.
