Malc, More Information Please

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 6/20/06 8:17 AM In reply to: Fathers day Downloading of world wind NASA by Jesse Chan

You didn't give us much informtion about your computer...Operating system? (Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP?) Video card type? (Look in Device Manager) DirectX version? (Click on Start-Run, type "dxdiag", then click on OK.) Where did you download the file from?

The error you're getting appears to be a problem with your video card. Either it doesn't support the necessary graphics mode or you need to update the driver. Have you tried recently updating the video driver?

Of course, since you mentioned, "downloading" of World Wind NASA, the file may be bad or corrupted depending on where you got the file from.

Hope this helps.

Make Sure to Update The Video Driver...

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 6/21/06 8:50 PM In reply to: Fathers day download by Jesse Chan

...to the most recent version but I'm afraid if you're using the older TNT2, then it may not support all the graphics requirements of the new game. (Are you sure it's not a "NVIDIA TNT2 Model 64" card? (Not model 2?) Did you type the model of the card slightly wrong?) Still, that card supports 3D and I would sure try installing updated drivers. Installing a newer and more advanced video card should solve the issue but then you'll need to spend some cash.

In addition, do you have .NET FRamework 1.1 installed? It's one of the requirements. If not, you'll need to download and install three separate items to get it completely on the machine. Using the links below install the program IN THE ORDER I give them:

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

ASP.NET Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1[/b

Here's a quote from the "Download.com" review:

The program's main drawback, however, is it is very resource-needy. If your system runs under 1GHz, 256MB, and has a low-end video card and connects to the Internet over dial-up, don't bother trying to download this 100MB monster. Even on our testing computers (which far exceed the program requirements) the program component Scientific Visualization Studio ran abysmally slow.

I doubt if you downloaded it from Microsoft?

Hope this helps.

Thanks once again Grif, checked the video card
Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 64/Model64Pro straight from my Device Manager, other points memory 256mb and 1.54GHz from your review it looks like I am on the bread line, also downloaded .Net Framework version 1.1 Redistributable Package, but it would not let me download service pack in order before I update my video card drivers,so that is my next step, I find this very interesting hope when I download my drivers I can get back to you.

Many thanks Malcolm

One small step for man------------etc.

Just My Way Of Doing Things...

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 6/22/06 8:50 AM In reply to: Fathers daydownload by Jesse Chan

Usually, on Windows XP, you don't need to actually uninstall the previous video driver before updating to the new one.. You should be able to download the new driver from any location at the site, including the mirror sites, although I try to use the primary first, and once the installer file is on your desktop, double click to install. It should install itself "over the top" of the old one..

Still, should you decide to uninstall the old, you'll be requested to restart the computer and a "default" driver will be installed when Windows re-recognizes the video card.. So the graphics won't be perfect but you will be able to see things. You can then install the new drivers..

And yes, if it all goes wrong, you "should" be able to restore back.

Hope this helps.
