My pc reboots frequently, what can be the problem?

by feature - 6/21/06 11:34 AM

hi everybody,
i am a new member to this community.

I have a problem with my pc.My pc was rebooting every
10-15 minutes and so I had to visit a pc hardware
service point.I was told the problem was with the
powerIC on the mother board and I got it replaced
with a new one.The serviceman also replaced the filters on the mother board saying
they were not in a good condition.
Infact, now the duration between each reboot is increased to hours. My pc now reboots for every 4-5hrs.My pc is 5years old ,P3 Intel pentium processor ,1.1GHz and 128 MB of RAM.

Can any body help me know what the problem is with my pc?Do i need to upgrade my pc?

Some OSes report errors in the EVENT VIEWER.

Sadly the details are not quite fully disclosed in your posting so I'll note that we should check the EVENT VIEWER (XP/2000/NT/2003) which may yield a clue to the issue if it's not hardware related. Onboard sound is a common cause as well as heat. Heat can be sniffed out by leaving the case cover off. The bad capacitors (filters to some) is a known issue if you research on google.com (type BAD CAPS into google.)

The RAM is about 1/2 what we'd like to see with today's common applications and OS which will cause the hard disk to work a little hard. Any glitch in RAM or hard disk could cause a reboot. RAM TESTS such as MEMTEST86 are easy to find with google.com as well as DRIVE FITNESS tests.

Best of luck finding the problem.

I found errors reported in the EVENT VIEWER

Thanks for replying to my post.

As u mentioned in your reply,I have checked the EventViewer and many i found are errors by W32Time .
One more thing i observed immediately after the pc reboots is,the OS opens the System32 folder on the desktop.Does it mean any hardware problem or OS(Windows XP on my pc ) problem ?. Please let me know what details of my pc, u would want me to disclose.

Fine clue!

The folder SYSTEM or SYSTEM32 opening is often a sign that SPYWARE or other pest has damaged the OS. While google.com and typing in SYSTEM32 OPENS ON BOOT finds possible cures (I won't duplicate that here) my key point is that you may be the victum of spyware/pests. My first response is EWIDO and HOUSECALL scans, removing what they find. Fix the opening folder too.

The Event Viewer item is also noted on google.com so I'll just add that it's unlikely that it's the cause. But I'd research the time service of XP and see if you can select another time server.

As to disclosing details, I won't dig it out of members. Imagine if I had to with every reply I've made. This is not tech support but a discussion and you can add more detail as you feel is needed. I use what clues you provide and write what I think is going on.

-> In closing, it's time to curtail your use of Internet Explorer (a common pest intrusion point) and turn off preview in your email software. That should help slow further damage.
